Yeah, Kapanen is valuable, but the Habs aren’t really a playoff team and will probably sign Gardiner in the offseason, so does a half year of Gardiner and a low first equal Petry? Unfortunately not, so you’ll need to add Kapanen. And then you can downgrade the first to a third.

lots of lefties in the draft. we'll draft one. Kapnen would look good beside Kotkaniemi. Finnish connection too. we have a ton of righties.

Not adding a Top 6 Forward to a Top 4 Defender (yes Gardiner is Top 4, he just gets flamed by Leafs fans, me included). The first will still yield you a decent prospect. It will likely be in the 24-28 range if the Leafs win 1 playoff series (I don't expect them to win more than 1)

Was worth a shot. I'd trade Nylander before Kapanen, but not in a deal for Petry unfortunately. Maybe a Kapanen deal with a midish pick (like a late 2nd/mid round 3rd) for Petry? Top 6 Forward for Top 4 D?

Hard to believe that there good be such a bad trade for both teams. 1. Teams don't allow other their players to negotiate contracts with other teams mid season. 2. Leafs don't have cap for Petry next year unless another trade is made. 3. Wouldn't Montreal be 10X better off keeping Petry, signing Gardiner next summer and just forgo the pick.

The trade that I’d propose is 1.5 million retained Petry for Kapanen and a third. Is that ok? Would the pick have to be taken out?

Would likely be in Montreal's best interest to keep Petry yes. Montreal is on the market for a LHD for Shea to play with and potentially mentor.
Just trying to get the Leafs a decent Top 4 RHD to do something positive for the team.
Can't have Dermott/Gardiner/Rielly do all of the grunt work, especially after tonight's game where Rielly was absolutely burnt out

potentially. could likely do something like that, as much as I would hate to lose Kappy

Gardiner wouldn’t sign with the Habs if you offered him 10m and held his mother for ransom.... sorry need to be said.

Personally I think he looks to go play for the wild back home.

Agree. IMO, Petry should be traded for picks/prospects only. From a Habs perspective, it doesn't make sense to acquire a player that would push one of Mete, Juulsen, Byron, Danault or Lehkonen out of the protection list come the expension draft, unless that player is substantially better.

I would entertain the possibility. I just think that if Habs do trade Petry, it's better off at the deadline. If teams are desperate he can fetch a pretty penny.

However, as others suggested, I would jump on Kapanen and 1st for Petry and 3rd (or slight salary retention). Just don't think MTL and TOR will make trades when they're both competing. Rivalry bull**** I guess
