Description

Kings get some immediate cap relief in exchange for taking on an extra year of a worthless overpaid defenseman. They are also able to send Alzner to Ontario since he doesn't have a NMC, unlike Phaneuf, who has to stay on the roster.

Montreal picks up a contract which carries a $625k higher AAV, but gets out of their terrible defenseman contract a season earlier. Since they have a reasonable amount of cap space, they can probably afford to do that. Since Phaneuf has a NMC, they have to keep him on the roster.

Phaneuf would have to include Montreal on his 12-team trade list, while Alzner couldn't include LA on his 7-team no trade list, neither of which is a guarantee to happen.

MTL is further along in a rebuild so shorter term helps them. They also have auditioned Alzner next to Weber and haven't had any luck. Phaneuf is worth a try.

I don't pretend that Phaneuf will be of any value to Montreal at all. He's slightly less terrible than Alzner. The only benefit for the Habs is that they can get him off the books a year earlier.

Alzner signed with Montreal because he wanted playoff success. I really doubt he waives for a basement team in LA

He doesn't have to waive. He only gets to pick 7 teams that he won't accept a trade to. Is LA on that list? Maybe. However, there's a lot to be said for non-hockey related life in Southern California vs somewhere like Columbus or St. Louis.

as a kings fan id take this trade. Alzner will be 33 (how old dion is right now) when his contract runs out and is on a less AAV term than dion. I loved dion his whole career and was stoked to see him come to LA but he just looks old and slow and cant control the puck anymore. Still brings it in the hits column and has a nice clapper but for LA, Alzner makes more sense for a bad contract

MTL takes it for 1 Important Reason

Kotkanemi got checked REAL DIRTY by Del Zotto and Paquette with Alzner on Ice and NOTHING was done by Captain Useless . . .

Phaneuf would have knocked the head clean off both them and protected our Youth .

Alzners a good player but if he's playing bottom 6 (which is at best all he could ) then you're fighting or you're ****ing off as leaving that **** for Byron to deal with is exactly what we dont frigging want .

he's also cheaper to buy out after this year . (we'd buy him out now but we'd be stuck with 4m cap hit next year and 1m the other 4 years but if they do it next year i think its around 3m and 1m for 3 years.

Phaneuf we can keep as long as he'll hit and fight we have a big gapping hole for 8 seasons he can fill in that regard

Seems good in theory, but Dion will NEVER waive to be moved ever again. He's been wanting to be in LA for years because of his actress wife. I'm sorry, but someone will have to "Nancy Karrigan" him to be rid of him.

Phaneuf has never waived his NTC. Every time his team approached him for a trade, he declined to waive, as is his right. However, per the conditions of his clause, he has to submit a list of 12 teams he would accept a trade to. If Montreal is on that list, he has no option to decline.

like most Canadian Actress's she also has a home in California for Work Purposes but Elisha only works 2-3 months a year tops.(if DP didnt get traded there she wouldnt be in LA during the hockey season .)
