You want to give a 30 year old defenceman who isn't very fast already, a 7 year deal worth 7.5 million? Have we learned nothing from contracts like everyone in LA, Corey Perry, Ryan Kesler, Toews, etc? Giving term and cap space to old players is about as bad a move as one can make.

The team is for 2020-21 - so with a a 3.5 mil cap raise for 2019-20 and 2019-21 each that will be cap ceiling of 86.5 million so an 86.25 mil cap hit is plausible for 2020-21

The longest term I would sign for is to the age of 35 - 5 years.

pietrangelo isn't such a bargain now, never mind in two years. you've keep Ozhiganov, keep him at this proper side rhd, along with Zaitsev, and Liljegren. maybe the last two second rounders rhd rasemun and durzi are NHL ready.

I wouldn't sign him at all. Whatever his price tag, he won't be worth it. His best days are behind him when he hits 30, this is statistically what we can expect. Its incredibly rare to see a career improvement in your 30's. You have a better chance of winning the draft lottery. Pietrangelo is going to want to get paid for money he left on the table when he was in his 20's. When he hits FA and tests the market, there will without a doubt be some idiot GM who pays him a huge contract and it will almost immediately be a bad move, much like LA's with Doughty. Sure Doughty is still a top player but will he be a top defenceman at 32? That will be in year 2 of his contract that pays him 11 million dollars.
