Pietrangelo Pesce aaaand Lucic

Created by: Goulet
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 14, 2018
Published: Dec. 17, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Lucic at half price is tradeable and could be Babcock's new Holmstrom. If JT and Marner can't revive his career, maybe Matthews can.
St Louis fans will want more youth but you're a win now team.
If anyone gets traded for a D I believe Kadri is the man. He is a fan favorite but they'll get over it. Moving Nylander into the middle opens up a spot for Bracco and allows the bff's to play on the same line.
M & M like less term for a bigger UFA payday and all is well in Leafland.

Chirp away.

And conceivably, these deals could all get done this year.

You should at least take the Blues out to dinner before you try to rear-end them like this.

Add liljegren and a 2nd?

To be honest I’m not sure when this trade goes down. If this is a TDL move it is okay as is. It is a 19/20 agm.

He does make mention that it could be this year so that’s what I think the add would be for this season.

STL says no, Carolina probably says no. If McDavid couldn't revive Lucic's career I don't think anyone on the Leafs will be able to either.

I was assuming that this happens before the deadline this year, but you're right it doesn't really say.

List of recently traded players that aren't as valuable as Pietrangelo but have gotten a better return than Zaitsev + Brown + 1st:

Evander Kane rental
Tomas Tatar rental
Paul Stastny rental
Ryan Hartman RFA
Rick Nash rental
Derick Brassard 2 yrs
Travis Hamonic
Brayden Schenn 3 yrs

the list goes on and on

The way I see it, Brown and Zaitsev do nothing for the Blues. Part of improving for next year is going to be internal promotions, and adding cap for guys that don't really do anything should be the opposite of what the Blues are looking to do. We've definitely beat this Pietrangelo trade to death but l think the ask needs to involve a young forward with upside (Kapanen or Johnsson), a top defensive prospect (Liljegren or Sandin), Zaitsev (to balance cap) and a draft pick that would depend on the look of the whole trade. Blues can also kick back a depth forward that would be a cheap replacement for Kap/AJ. Maybe Barbashev/Sundqvist/Sanford.

Yup, I agree. If you kick back another young forward takes away a bit of the blow from loosing a good young player. many people put much value on brown but he is a great utility player and is great for digging up pucks for goal scorers. Pretty much a carbon copy of Hyman but a bit faster. The issue is we have his replacement on the marlies.

Not even close. Oilers have no point still paying half of lucic, blues laugh very hard. I dont know why leafs fans think zaitsev and brown are worth anything. Sure there is a first there it blues laugh when they offered a poor bad contract defenseman and a 4th liner. Also Matthews is no where near mcdavid so if he cant do something matthews definitely cant. Stop trying to trade zaitsev for anything more than a 5th

None of those deals represent any more value. A 1st plus is pretty standard for them all and then bodies are added and some have deeper picks. 2 nhlers are worth more than a bunch of maybes.

The ask can be through the roof but the reality is that the majority of these types of deals, including the ones you mentioned, and include Karlsson as well, are quantity deals, not quality. Contenders don't want to take from their rosters when adding what is perceived as a rental.

Lucic does suck. But adding him is fun and with the sheer volume of the use of the word "heavy" in Babcock's scrums, he could be fun.

Adding one D doesn't solve the Leafs issues on the backend. There is a mismatch of players that don't complement one another which is the ultimate problem.

McDavid is too fast for Lucic and the expectations were too high. Tavares gave many AHLers careers so it could be worth a shot. All this recent talk of the Leafs needing toughness I went off the board for a good laugh.

St louis has to do something and not many teams can afford Pietrangelo. Carolina needs to do something as well.

The Leafs don't need to make the St. Louis deal. It would be a luxury to acquire him before free agency so there is no need to overpay.

I did the numbers for next year to see how much of a stretch it would be on the cap and also to show what it would take for this team to be considered a real contender.
