1) the other team needs to offer the Offer sheet
2) the other teams needs to have the picks needed

If Marner was to sign a contract that large, I'd let him walk or trade him. Nylander at less than 7 million is an incredibly more valuable contract to have than Marner at anything more than 9 million. Those two players are not as far off from each other as Nylander is to Kapanen. So if someone offer sheets Marner for that much money, let him go and keep Nylander. Its a much better contract to deal with than 12.5 for a winger.

Sure would like to see the teams and their rosters that could afford Matthews at 16m or Marner at 12.5m. Virtually all team have cap issues, or have their own RFAs to sign. To overpay for someone else's RFAs and give compensations seems to be a losing proposition. Having these fathom offer sheets without naming team or showing how the cap fits their rosters, makes this a rather feeble proposition.

It's not about what you are worth it's about what you can get. And no he can't get 16 million. But he will probably get 13, and that would be fair.

Gonna be another long off season for the leafs. I don't see Marner taking a discount. I see him holding out till he gets paid.

40 million spread between 4 guys Tavares, Mathews, Marner and Nylander, that's the most likely budget, 11 for Tavares and 7 for Nylander that leaves 22 million to split between Mathews and Marner.13.5 and 8.5? 13 and 9? 12.5 and 9.5? 12 and 10? 11.5 and 10.5? 11 and 11?

Al that money spent on forwards and The defense is still crap ?

I agree but it is not what he is worth, but what the market thinks he is worth and what a GM might and will do to make his club a winner.

Carolina tried to sign Federov to a long very front loaded contract, which then owner Karmonos regretted. It drove up salaries in the pre cap era. That is why owners wanted the cap to protect themselves from them selves.

Well, Arizona doesn't sell tickets when Matthews plays his two games a year in Arizona, except to Leaf fan snowbirds. Now I admit that Arizona is the one team that could take a run at Matthews because they do have the cap. I question if Matthews would see tickets, but it might be worth the chance to offer sheet hm. But it's nonsense that Arizona needs Matthews to get the floor. Can't fans get over this illusion that Arizona needs salary to get to the cap floor? Arizona has plenty of cap space between the cap floor and the maximum cap,
