Yep, I think you have to take out the 4th and Brown and put in Johnsson. I know Brown has controversial value, but the reality is that he's a bottom six winger and he's not better than what we currently have for that role. Over this season and last, his 5v5 pts/60 are about equal to Barbashev and Sundqvist. But both of those guys can play center and are going to be cheaper than Brown to play on the 4th line. Johnsson is more productive and would be a better fit in the top 9.

Intriguing. But for the quality of prospects and draft pick TOR is better dealing with CAR for Ferland and Pesce. Due to the contracts (even though STL did take on Zaitsev's contract) both STL players would be rentals and not re-signed. TOR wants a shot at the Cup this year but also wants to be competitive long term. I also think TOR likes Parayko's contract better.

The value is right here, but I personally dont think this is worth it. Banking on two expiring contracts for a one year push doesn't plan for the future. Plus, never trade a young defenseman that shows the promise that Lili does. He has been looking amazing. Sandin and Lili look like they are going to grown together into a power house. There value goes way above and beyond that of Petro in the long term. Parayko, I would be forced to reconsider, but Petro is a big no from me.

This seems to be the feedback from most Leafs fans - and it makes a lot of sense. I don't think Dubas would be very interested in pushing in all of his chips, but this would be about the value I'd want to see if we move Pietrangelo.

Exactly, the value is technically correct. I just dont think its smart long term. If Torontos young defense can take a step forward you will have Sandin, Lili and Dermott on cheap contracts. That is value, and it takes one of them to over achieve and all of a sudden, Torontos D goes from the reception it has now, to a solid group.

Typical leafs fan that thinks Liljegren is looking amazing. Sandin is already out preforming him with lesser deployment and being an entire year behind. Neither of these two will ever be on Pietrangelo level. With that being said, if this deal included Sandin I wouldn't touch it. Just like if it included Parayko. His cap hit and term is appealing but is very well suited for someone with such limited offensive upside (the big slapshot is nice). Petro is under contract through next year as well which just so happens to line up perfectly with Marleau coming off the books. Petro will then want to get paid, and so he shall as one of the league's premier defensemen. If you get a chance to trade a 30th overall pick, a defenseman that may never succeed in the big leagues and a forward that can produce at a 20 goal pace playing alongside a top 5 center in the league, for Petro you take it.

That comment gets so old. I hate the typical leaf fan comment. I forgot points mean everything, thanks for that great insight!

@MapleLeafs97 @Davisoc

I think you both have a chance of being right with your opposing comments above. It’s simply differing opinions based on how you each value Pietrangelo and the Leafs’ D prospects.

Personally, I’m skeptical on Liljegren. Mono is not the sole reason he dropped that far in the draft. Other teams must have seen something in his game that gave them cause for concern. Is it possible that Liljegren or Sandin might one day play at the level of Pietrangelo? Sure. I just don’t think it’s probable which is why I would pull the trigger on a deal like this.

That being said, I think it’s a much safer play for Dubas to make low risk additions (pending UFAs) at the deadline and give his D prospects time to develop and hopefully contribute at some point while on entry level contracts.

This website wouldn’t be any fun tho if we all just rolled with the ‘safe’ approach

I personally dont think Sandin or Lili will be Petro level as individuals. I think them growing as a pair is where you will see that value. Just my take, you know?

I understand, its really unfortunate that Liljegren is going to miss the world juniors, I was really hoping that his play there would be dominate enough to change my mind on him as a prospect. At least it would have given us leaf fans a much better perspective on his comparison to other prospects within the league. Oh well, time will tell.
