First off, their are better rentals than Smith, and Calgary isn't trading their "starter" while contending.
Second, there is no way we get Petry and Simmonds for that, if we could they would already be on our team.
Third, their are options that wont cost us good roster players, we are contending, we dont need to give up roster players. Lovejoy is an option that keeps being floated and I bet you a 4th and Holl could get that done.

For the rental of Simmons Phily absolutely makes that deal and to put Kapanen on Kotkaniemi's RW ... ya MB makes that trade ... and would be part of my plan for the Habs

My thoughts

Kappy > Simmonds. Not sure which Mike Smith shows up each night, and if it's the good one who helps a playoff run, then why wouldnt Calgary keep him? Petry would help, but he would cost too. So, all in all, it kinda feels like some sideways moves for marginal gains.

Also, and even after several posters have tried to spell things out to me in very simple terms, I still don't have a clue how much cap space needs to be saved to cover performance bonus. I'm hopelessly hopeless.

It's also a cap league. Leafs would be forced to carry over all their Perf Bonuses. Why do the first place Flames, trade their starting goalie?

Calgary does make that trade if they can get Quick from LA and you do get Petry and Simmons for that ...but if you'd rather have a 34 year old rental that has 3 assists this season instead of a 31 year old that's top 10 in league scoring amongst defenseman ... okay

he is 7th in league scoring among d men and playing with inconsistent partners. he is in his prime, signed at a very reasonable contract and term, is a right shot. this is gold in the nhl. also, kapenen is great, but mtls biggest need is the left side on defense. philly isnt gettng anything vaulable for symmonds. u have to add a young player and prospect. not a bottom pairing d man and career echlers

Not sure about the other trade concepts you listed. But having Wayne Simmonds on a line with Nazem Kadri in the playoffs would be fun to watch - especially if Babcock was to play the matchup game more with other teams. Nothing like having two pests on a line together grinding out other players on the boards and creating mischief in front of the net.

If Bergevin made trades like that, he would no longer be the GM of Montreal. He stuck around because he knows what he is doing. His name is not Peter Chiarelli. If you want a good #3 defencemen like Petry, you are going to have to pay a pretty penny

Went into this thinking i'd hate this but was pleasantly surprised. I sadly agree that Kapanen will be the odd man out.

would rather have Kapanen than no meaningful playoff experience Petry
If Leafs moved Kapanen, someone like Pietrangelo would have to be on the other side of the equation

You are right, teams prove year after year that it is worth sacrificing their future for a cup run. Yup, definitely the smart move.
