Why would a rebuilding team trade a 5th round pick to take on that contract?

Not necessarily, but with the cap room here we could definetly do it.

Depth defenseman/mentor to the younger guys. Experienced leadership guy is something they could use. His contract will be done before they'll be in a contending position.

I think Vancouver can get that at a much cheaper price, so pass on this deal.

I like most of the trades but I don't think we can move Phaneuf anywhere. The Toffoli and Clifford deals are particularly sharp.

I hope that Leipsic and Peterson play well enough this season to merit bigger raises.

I hope that Vilardi is able to play hockey again some day.

If Austin Wagner learns how to finish, his speed should earn him a spot on this team.

Happy New Year, and may it be a good one for you!!

You know, the Carolina uber-fanatics are always claiming Brett Pesce is the next Scott Stevens even though he plays on the third pairing for the Hurricanes. At least they admit that they desperately need right-handed forwards and a real goaltender. What about Toffoli and Campbell and maybe Amadio or Brodzinski for Pesce and one of their two 2019 seconds?

If that statement is accurate I would definitely consider it. Especially because I don't know of Clague will be NHL ready by this time and quite honestly I want him to really develop down there no matter how long it takes. We saw what that kind of development did for Voynov.
