Montreal retains half of Petry's salary and gives us a 3rd, Toronto doesn't give you guys a 2nd, we MIGHT *not* have a deal. Petry's good, solid D that could help us out big time, but I'd much rather have a young Kapi.

This is awful. Without Petry the habs would be a lottery team right now. Weber and Petry is a solid top 4, that's about all the habs have going for them defensively. Why does MTL need Kapanen? They have Suzuki and Ylonen coming. Kapanen is a good player but his numbers are inflated big time by playing with Matthews.

Leafs would do this trade in a heartbeat - anyone who says otherwise doesn't have a clue.

Edit:
You know this is a bad trade when it forces Shaw (who is on pace for 52 pts) to the 4th line and Armia (who was playing well with Kotkaniemi before getting injured) to the 4th line. While also losing your 2nd best defenseman on the team.

Hudon would almost replace Kapanen and Petry would solve Torontos issues at D.. you are joking right?

A solid top 3 D-man is much harder to find than a 2nd/3rd line winger if anything that 2nd round pick could easily be a 1st especially with kapanens contract ending and the leafs getting petry at a team friendly 4.5 mil

replacing Hudon for Kapanen... nice joke man, nice joke. But seriously, we have common ground for Petry. He would be valuable to us.

Im thinking that kapanen will more than likely become a better player than both shaw and armia. KK and kapanen could be a very solid duo for years to come , Could easily change the 2020 2nd to a 2019 2nd or 2020 1st as well just trying to look at it from both perspectives .. The habs arent winning anytime soon so losing petry doesnt mean much to the team especially when we finally have good young D in the system

Yes, but MTL already has Suzuki and Ylonen in there prospect pool, 2 guys would be playing the role Kapanen is.

Edit:
If you're trading Petry because MTL won't be winning anytime soon then why are you acquiring a RW when the habs have Suzuki and Ylonen. Should be trading Petry for a LD or nothing at all.

Hudon scored at a pace of 34 points last year, Kapanen scored at a pace of 19 pts. Kapanen broke out this year playing with Matthews while Nylander wasn't playing, Hudon would put up points playing with Matthews too. Yes, Kapanen is better than Hudon but I dont think Kapanen is a special player. Hudon would help replace Kapanens spot on Forward and Petry would solve TOR's defensive issues, it's a no brainer for Toronto.

Youre absolutely correct but they could both easily be busts at the nhl level you never know, id rather have too many good players in 3-5 years then players that didnt work out

I was gonna type out a big slur about comparing points, but Hudon will be on pace for 30 ponits if he keeps it up. I just find that Hudon will get a tad better then he is now and that's it. Toronto could sign Kapanen to a nice bridge contract and Kapanen could grow to a 60+ point player regardless if he plays with Matthews or not. I went to watch Toronto last year (they Boston and NY Islanders, they won both games and Matthews got hurt vs Boston), I found Kapanen was by far one of the best players on the ice alongside Marner. He had a bunch of chances and he plays very well defensively. You may not think he's special, but you can't tell say that Hudon can replace or would help replace Kapanen.
Hudon would be tossed on the third or fourth line, Petry would play very nicely with Rielly.

I don't know where Kapanen is being used right now after Nylander came back (I just know Nylander is struggling), but I would think the leafs will use Marner and Nylander in the top 6 and therefore Kapanen will be a 3rd liner and I don't see a 3rd liner getting 60 pts. Kapanen is a good player I was impressed with him in preseason this year, but then again Hudon was impressive in preseason as well.

1. Petry is top 10 in scoring in the NHL for defenseman.
2. Kapanen is either a fringe player or middle six forward AT BEST
3. Hudon is a fringe NHLer

if toronto wanted petry theyd have to give up a 1st round pick and another roster player. The habs are in NO POSITION to give up any productive/effective defenseman. We need Left defence. So the trade makes no sense. The leafs would be laughing if we offered them this trade

I would do nylander for petry but thats just creating more holes on the back end. Not helping
