Description
Dubas has no choice but to pull something out of his magic hat.

First off, Matthews gets signed between 11-12 million. Marner gets 8.75-10 million. Kapanen and Andreas take bridge contracts.

Now for Gardiner...
He would have to take a pay cut, but that means losing on a player being paid roughly 2 million. Connor Brown is a great player and he's a work horse, but he's too much for a 4th line player and could be sent away to any team seeking interest in him for some picks (A 3rd and a 4th seemed fine, could be more or less, also Dallas seemed like a good fit for Brown).

Maybe we don't need Gardiner...
I was very tempted to not sign him at all to see what we could get other then him. Alexander Edler, Marc Methot, Jay Bouwmeester or possibly Tyler Myers would be great replacements for Gardiner, but they would have to be paid 4.25 million or less. Personally, I would die to have Marc on our team. He's by far one of the best defensive guys in the league and he doesn't get credit for it. being under the radar I feel like he would be the perfect veteran for our group.
Same situation goes to Ron Hainsey. He can easily be replaced by better/younger defense. Maybe Liljegren makes the jump with Rielly to grow, or maybe with Gardiner. Maybe Holl, Rosén, Sandin or Marincin could make the jump and be an active defensemen.

Let me know what you guys think. Thought I'd keep it simple instead of trading Auston Matthews away for John Scott.

Cheers.

You asked for thoughts. First you have a roster of 20 with little cap. So how practical is that? So, Gardiner is not a Leaf next year. ZERO chance. Now base your cap off that. And you have to resign Ozhigakov.
Doubt if the Leafs want Gauthier as their four line centre next year. Lindholm is better and has wing capability.

Let Gardiner go and sign a cheap vet defenseman to bridge to the young guys. It barely fits, but then Marleau will be done after 1 year

Still think Matthews gets more, but I know that is not a universal opinion

No magic needed gardiner walks.. you gave him a pay cut and are still about 1.5m short. We will be depending on Rosen, liljegren and possibly sandin making the team next season. Even Marincin has looked competent this year. If not we will need to sign a cheap vet. I doubt Dubas is going to pull any rabbit out of a hat and get Matthews and marner to take 75% of what they are worth.

That's what I was thinking in the first place, let Gardiner go and bring in one of the veteran players I mentioned for a year. What do you think Matthews should get @littlejerryseinfeld ? I could see him get more then McDavid too because of the market he's in.

I guess peoples thoughts vary by subject lol... @palhal
I get reality, I can't see Gardiner as a Leaf after this season too, but it's the effort of trying to keep some chemistry and to make Gardiner better. Even if he takes a bigger cut, the team could work. Who do you thhink should be there?

Hahaha again @Jamiepo , trying to make something work xD. Matthews and marner will no way in hell take 75% of what they are worth, guarantee. I find Marner contract is fair, it's Matthews contract that puzzles people. I think 11.5 is the slowest it will go, I can possibly see him get upwards to 13.
On D, we need a veteran regardless. I don't have much confidence in Rosen, Liljegren and possibly Sandin or Marincin. I believe they have something to show, but they need to gradually get the feel to play in the NHL.

Here are the players we are depending on, marincin Borgman sandin liljegren and Rosen of the 5 we need two to be nhl good. Rosen would have been a leaf this season if not for dermott, marincin has looked good this season and Borgman already has nhl experience. So filling the bottom pair shouldn’t be an issue but you may want a vet guy. The hopeful part is one of sandin or liljegren being nhl good.

I’ll give 5 starts for the description. Like everyone above, I don’t see Gardiner fitting in. Dermott should be ok to take over his minutes and then one of Sandin, Rosen, Borgman, or cheap UFA vet can fill the third pairing LD. Maybe...maybe there’s a 5% chance Gardiner stays if they offload a contract like Zaitsev. But I think he’ll get $6m + in free agency elsewhere.

Assuming they don’t make a trade deadline add for a RD with term, I think they’ll dip into free agency to find a Hainsey replacement...vet guy that they can get for 1-2 years under $3m. Myers could be interesting depending on what his ask is. Methot would be a nice fit on that left side but will probably be too expensive. I’d like to see them give Holl some regular playing time this year to see if he can be relied on for 3rd pairing minutes to know if he’s an internal option.

I like Brown too but I think the first three lines are so potent (and expensive) that there’s no reason to have anyone making more than $1m on the fourth line. I like Par Lindholm over Gauthier but only it he wants to re-sign under a mil.

@Juice I bet your the only one that read the description too hahaha! Thanks buddy. Just trying to find out what everyones thoughts on what we do to keep Gardiner. I have days where I like him, some theres some hate. Although if he has to go, it makes total sense. Same situation as JVR, there's no way he would have stayed.

Ya. I neither love nor hate Gardiner. I think he’s great in the role he’s in right now and for the salary he’s making. But you’re spot on with the JVR comparison IMO. Sometimes you have to let good players leave so that you can keep the great ones.
