I think you fleece yourself in the Werenski and Wennberg deals. STL would be interested in both of those guys if you are looking to move them, though.

TB trade is actually pretty even. Miller is better than Wennberg so CBJ add a cost efficient defenseman and a pick to help even it out.

As far as Z goes, the Jackets will be looking to get value for now and in the future. Vegas is a better option as they will have the cap to sign Z. Blues would be interesting but they are cap strapped and that would mean the Jackets would taking a lot of cap back. No good there.

    2 things.

    1) Columbus can't offer Matthews an 8 year deal, only 7.
    2) TO matches that offer immediately

Thing is I don't think Matthews signs that offer sheet. It might use it as leverage to get a few more dollars from the Leafs and to get a term he prefers. So there is no need for the Leafs to match. My thought is Matthews doesn't want the longest term and might want to seek UFA sooner. I'd predict he would sign for 12m for 6 years, maybe even 5 years, so he has as UFA freedom sooner. Matthews probably knows his best exposure as star (and future commercial earnings) is on a very good team such as the Leafs instead of seven years in Columbus.

My bad you're right on the 8 year thing. So think of it a 7.

are the blue jackets even a better team after this? IMO they're probably worse. Not to mention, they will probably be forced to trade Dubois.

How are so sure the CBA will be as good for him in the future? He might want to take the term and money now, instead of risking millions in the future. As far as his marketability, he is already a known commodity. He won't lose his market as much as you would think. Matching an offer sheet like that could really tie the hand of the Leafs in trying to improve on defense which is a clear weakness.

First, I don't believe players are going to get fewer dollars in the future. But he might not be giving up much money signing with the Leafs. Columbus wants offers 14m, Leafs offer 12m. Would he leave for 2m? IMO no. Heck it looks like Panarin and Bob want out of Columbus and certainly they can offer their two UFAs the most term. Leafs defence weak? Why is this a theme? Didn't hear of any trade talk or Columbus weak defence talk after game against the Leafs, and Jones poor play. Even with Jones, Werenski and Bob...the CBJ are 19th in GAA......Leafs and their clear weakness defence 7th.

Panarin is a bit of an enigma. He wants money but he also wants to make the correct decision. He probably wants to get to the FA visit window before he ultimately wants to sign. He seems measured. He doesn't hate Columbus at all. Bob's situation is a bit different. He wants to be in Columbus but he wants Cary Price money. If the CBJ came in with an offer like that, Bob would sign immediately. Jarmo and the Jackets seem reluctant to do this based off his playoff record. Back to Matthew's, 2 mil per year is a lot of money left on the table. This equates to 12 mil for the life of the deal. Plus, his contract would ultimately make it difficult to field a consistent winning team around him. Columbus has cap flexibility in the coming years with Foligno, Dubinsky, and Savard coming off the books.

I think you are high as F. Not only does Matthews sign that, he laughs his ass off all the way to the bank.
Furthermore, Matthews wants a 7-8 year deal. Signing a shorter deal does him no favors. He's only going to have 2 major contracts ever. If he signs the first one for 5 years and the next one for 8 that's 13 years. Which puts him at 34 years old and he is probably done big money wise after that. Or he can sign a 7-8 year deal, be 28-29 at his peek and sign another 8 year deal and rake in big money for 16 years. With out a worry in the world while someone pays him large till he's 37 years old

FA is going to change in a big way. Players getting huge contracts in their late 20's will be a thing of the past very soon.

OK. Glad you know Matthew so well that wants a 7 or 8 year deal. It's just my opinion that he wants a shorter deal. Just my thought he wants to the opportunity explore his commercial possibly in New York or LA. It certainly wouldn't be unique. Nylander signed a six year deal., and Trouba has signed short term deals so he can in line to reach UFA status as soon as possible.
Panarin and Bob may not want to stay in Columbus as UFA, as max term, so it's possible that Matthews doesn't want Columbus either. But glad you are so positive about the next Matthews contract.

Yea, I was kinda disappointed in some many fans that came to the conclusion that Panarian "hated Columbus" just because he wanted to his explore his options next summer. Almost the same thing about Tavares, it wasn't that he disliked the Islanders or living on Long Island.
You mentioned expiring contracts of Foligno etc. It would be the 2020/21 cap dilemma with Dubois and Anderson needing new contracts and those other guys maybe still on the books. We have the same discussion in LeafLand where so many think when Marleau's 6.25m contract ends there will be all this i free money to spend on a UFA. Dermot and the new RFAs will be eating most of that money. That cap....will always be problem for good teams, and even some bad teams.

Toronto is a major market for advertising. He would make no more money advertising in NY than he would in Toronto. Hockey players are much more famous in canada than they are in the united states, where they have to compete against NFL, NBA, and MLB stars who are all more recognizable.
Your argument makes absolutely no sense at all.
