Stagger the contracts for a dynasty.

The St Louis trade is not about what it would cost, insert prospects and picks as needed, it was about clearing salary in one shot. Those players can go anywhere that needs them.

Yes and a lot of doors close... like the ability to re sign and the price to re sign. 8 year terms are thrown up because in the case of M&M they need to be locked down to the longest term possible. The amount you save doesn’t warrant losing these players to ufa.

Oh and to clarify one thing I do like the idea of staggering their contracts. I think marner at 6-7yrs and Matthews at 8yrs would be a good idea and I think is very possible.

So marner, matthews and kapanen are all grossly underpaid. Try 4.25 for kap, 10 for marner, 13 for matthews. Add whatever you want to st.louis trade they dont just want cap dumps and low level players to also retain on peitro. Now adding skinner and retaining Gardiner. No way this could fit not close

Leafs are worse with those expensive signings.....Sure you got Skinner and one year of Pietangelo but to give up regulars, Zaitsev, Brown and Hyman. Having Holl in the lineup. And some of those RFA could walk as UFA if they didn't want those pay cuts.

Chara, gaborik and rafalski off the top of my head.... but I’m sure there are more...

Might be a few more from Ottawa this year but most players that can’t be signed are rented out at TDL.

Signing marner to 4 and Matthews to 6 isn’t kicking the can down the road it’s catapulting a barrel of gasoline down to the next block. It certainly isn’t out of the realm of possibilities but is definitely not optimal. The 8m or so you lose signing those two later could help the team dramatically.
