Kadri to Montreal

Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 3, 2019
Published: Jan. 3, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Kapanen signs an 1 year deal to await a better long term deal after Marleau retires. Brown for Gagner only because Brown has a RFA expiring contract and will be expansion bait and adding Gagner whose contract will be UFA so his money goes to resigning the soon to be RFA Dermott. Ditto for adding Peca, short term help as an UFA. Must prepare for Andersen big pay raises in another couple more seasons.

Kadri has one of the most team friendly deals in the league, his production is worth more than adding two storks in peca and gagner who wouldnt produce as much as he would. Plus he plays a shut down role and on the PP. Keep him and trade Zaitsev or wait until Marleau's deal is up

I'm one of the few Leaf fans that sees the need and logic in trading Kadri or Nylander. But if Leafs should be trading for a need such as defence, or getting cap space. Peca sure can't handle big minutes at centre. IMO, if Kadri goes, Nylander should be moved to centre., since the Leafs have good and adequate wingers,
I would like a Kadri for something like TVR and Fleury of Canes, TVR is a one year rental (next summer) and those two guys could replace Gardiner and Hainsey.

I mean, when your top 2 Cs are Matthews and Tavares, why would you waste Nylander as a 3C? He's clearly very strong top 6 player (despite his tough start - which will improve 100%) and will close out the insane top 2 lines the leafs have. I do agree, however, that Kadri is a great trade chip to helps leads on D. He's definitely a good 2C and can really get you guys a nifty return so I would think it is worth it. As a 3C, even if the point production isn't huge, you're really looking for a strong shutdown, 200-foot player

Having Nylander at 3C wouldn't be a waste. Kadri scored 30 goals twice because he got lots of time. of the PP, which Nylander surely would. And as we saw with the Leafs this year, you need 3 good centres, cause if one goes down with injury then you still have two offensive guys. I think the numbering of lines is little hazy away with the Leafs. Just one reason of Kadri was that Nylander has more term, not that I would particularly want to trade Kadri. Dubas and friends will have to figure the cap math this summer.

Kadri has a NTC and I know from reading his bio that his father was a Habs fan when he was growing up, so I thought he'd accept that trade. The Habs though are weak in good NHL ready prospects and don't carry much cheap short term help. My other thought which I failed to write in my trade description was freeing up cap space to sign UFA Pietrangelo in the summer of 2020. With Marleau gone replaced by a Marlie (5 million saved), Kadri gone and replaced by someone at half his cost (3 million saved) Brown gone and replaced by a Marlie (1 million saved) you got 9 million to play around with (couple million raise for Dermott and maybe a couple more onto Kapanen too) but maybe that 5 million plus the cap increase gets you to a 7-8 million offer for Pietro.
