Right Handed D 18

Created by: Blackmore23
Team: 2018-19 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 3, 2019
Published: Jan. 4, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I understand everyone is going to throw a fit how we lost a right handed D to gain one back, but Rielly needs a good D partner to play with him, and Pesce is far superior then Zaitsev.

I believe the first trade with Carolina makes more sense since we can afford to lose two forwards to gain a great defensemen. I made up two scenarios, comment if there should be changes.
The Philly trade can happen to any team that would see interest in Zaitsev, but I don't know personally what he is worth so I made two scenarios to give us Toronto fans feedback (maybe he's worth a bag of pucks idk).
Connor Brown will have to be traded in order to have enough cap to sign Matthews and Marner.

For the cap issues everyone on this website has been talking about since Tavares was signed, here's my point of view.

First off, we either lose Andreas or Kapi, so we are saving between 1.2 - 3 million. Plus we save 500k trading Zaitsev away and bringing in Pesce.
We probably won't be signing Jordan Weal, Gardiner, Ron and Hutchinson.

Has Zaitsev been underperforming again this season?

@mikeyscav I fine he's playing okay with a decent contract, he just didn't live up to the hype we all thought he would be back in Russia. I feel with Pesce' contract, age and style of play, he would mesh better with Rielly whereas Zaitsev can't find his place with Rielly.

You're not getting Pesce for the first deal, And Kapanen+3rd for Pesce. Good luck with that.

What's your offer @Larkinisking ? Many trade rumors shows those two offers as the most talked about so...

Why would the Canes NOT do Pesce for Kapanen, they need scoring and Kapanen can provide that...do some research before commenting.

I know Carolina has strong interest in Kapanen by all reports, Just don't see the first one doing any thing for them. Brett Pesce is signed a a team-friendly deal he's worth more then just Kapanen and i'm not sure that a 3rd on top is any more reasonable.

Because the Canes are extremely high on Brett Pesce, His value to them is worth more then just Kapanen, That's why. When there was talk of a possible Nylander trade all agreed that Nylander for Pesce was pretty fair. Sorry don't see Kapanen alone being worth Pesce.

@Rooney11 THANK YOU! That's why I made two options, Johnsson could be a good top9/top6 forward for years to come and Bracco hopefully could play similar to Marner, OR Kapanen could grow and play with Aho for years.

@Larkinisking regardless of his team friendly contract, when your staked on defensemen for the future plus adding a right-handed young player that can score goals and play with their top players, id say it's a no brainer.

I think the window for the leafs to get Pesce is over...that door closed when Nylander signed. I also don’t believe that the Canes are interested in trading Pesce any longer.

I think your proposed deal including Kapanen is better, but don’t think it’s realistic given the current information.

@Caniac555 I see where going, but Nylander wasn't going to be traded. If I can recall, I've seen Carolina have more interest in Kapanen then Nylander. Two young Finland players on your top line, I think the were/are looking to build chemistry and find a young forward and can score.
I think it makes logical sense to me given what is online and what Kapanen has to offer over Nylander.

Pesce + 2nd for Kapanen +1st would be more realistic.
The value of a top pairing D is higher than a winger... who score alot playing with Marner & Tavy!
For cap purposes I would suggest Nylander for Pesce one on one.
Nylander will have a 7M salary for the next 7 year (more affortable than 10M this season)

Nylander was very much in play for the Canes until money got involved. IMO - Leafs paid too much...they are going to have to move things now to make it all work. Likely Kapanen and taking a bath on that terrible Zaitsev contract.

Not arguing the fit for Kapanen, actually I’ve wanted that to happen for a long time. His dad was a Whaler/Cane too. He fits a need, just don’t think it’s Pesce.

Canes package TVR plus salary, picks, prospects is likely the best being offered

@DomCholette Or the offer I made? Why would Carolina trade away a 2nd, which will be top 10 in the second round at least, and they get Toronto's 1st, which will be a late pick!! Also, Kapanen didn't play with Marner or Tavares this year!

I would suggest to do some research before commenting.

Yep. SO high, in fact, that they went out and acquired Dougie Hamilton last summer in order to push Pesce down the depth-chart.

So your basically backing up my point. Carolina fans would be excited too have Kapanen, and I'm sure he would be a great forward and help them out greatly. They could sign him to a bridge contract for 3 years, and see how he does. I do see how I could have added a 2nd to the trade.

I even like TVR and a package for him.

The value of a 1st pick even if its late is still significant to any team... versus a 2nd pick No# 40shhh.
Before Nylander IN he played PP minutes and was either with Tavy or with Matthews... now he as played on the third line for some shift lately bringing down is point per match.
          Those are fact. sorry

If I am reading this right, Pesce is costing the Leafs Kapanen, Johnsson and Bracco +. Is this team better with a 20 point defenceman making 4 million dollars and not having Kapanen, Johnsson or Bracco down the line and Zaitsev? The answer to that is no, they would not be better, they would be much worse. Pesce isn't half of what people think he is. He's a terrific player in his own zone with about 20-25 point potential. Before any of these Cane fans jump all over me, Pesce hasn't been part of the answer in Carolina who will miss the playoffs for the 10th straight year this season.

Why move several roster players for a step backwards. Next season TO will lose Hainsey and Gardiner and we'll make due with whatever we can get but losing a trade to upgrade a position that currently isn't a problem by sapping 2 roster forwards and a high value prospect from the team is poor asset management.

@DomCholette lol your funny bud. I'd much rather have an extra pick then give away a pick to receive 10 picks higher. Love your "great" and "accurate" facts man

@LoganOllivier No. There are two scenarios. Please read the description.

I figured it out eventually lol.

I still am against it. I don't think Pesce is nearly as good as people give him credit for. His team plays a shot suppression game so his defensive advanced stats are inflated but all in all, he isn't creative offensively and doesn't have a tonne of skill. I just don't see him as a huge upgrade.

Neither of those trades go thorough. Every Leaf fan over values the same handful of players, Zaitsev, Brown, Johnsson, Kapanen and all prospects.

Zaitsev is a negative value. His recent performance makes his contract completely undesirable.

Johnsson is 24 now, he is what he is as on offensive player in the NHL at this point nobody is going to trade him thinking they are getting a 35(ish) point middle 6 winger

Kapanen will be a good complimentary player in a top 6 but he will never be a guy that drives his own offensive line.

Youre not getting Carolina to give up a top pair RHD on a sweetheart contract without wither giving up more offensive help than Kapanen or Johnsson or including some actual legitimate prospects with NHL futures (not Bracco).

Youre also not getting Philly who already has a lot of defenseman to take on that Zaitsev contract AND give up draft picks plus an effective fourth line player.

I get what you're trying to do but this is wayyy to bias to be worth discussing

          1. Zaitsev is a dump, Philly doesn't have a lot of defenseman and has lots of cap to take on his contract. They could turn him around playing top4 minutes.
          2. Kapanen doesn't have to drive his line when he would have Aho and Teravainen.
          3. Why do you think Carolina traded their best left handed D for a right handed one? PLUS already having Faulk... Helllllloooo Pesce ain't a top pair on Carolina.

I think your not understanding any points already mentioned be others and understand the value of Pesce.
