Kaapo Kakko Komes to Kolorado TOR trade PK lines UFA signing

Description
First of all I'd like to thank the Ottawa Senators organization for being bad, now lets get on with the description:

Move out EJ instead of Barrie to make room for Makar and Timmins

Bring up a couple of kids - Makar, Timmins, Greer, Kakko

Leave Bowers and Kaut in NCAA and AHL for another year

Let Varly walk and bring in Francouz to battle it out with Grubauer for the number 1 spot

The only problem I see with moving Johnson instead of Barrie is the PK lines. I would rather not use Makar, Girard, or Barrie on the PK as they are offensively minded. That leaves Cole, Zadorov, and Timmins for 2 PK units. I would like to see the Avs use a 3F-1D approach on one of their units (likely with Cole) and use Zadorov and Timmins on the other unit. The PK formation would basically be a diamond when the puck is being controlled by the PP near the blue line, but when the puck is down low or when the PP unit shifts off to one side a forward will act as a defensemen. Basically the PK unit goes into the wedge +1 formation and the forward on the far side moves down to act as the defensemen on the far side. Here's an article on it:
https://mapleleafsnation.com/2018/08/23/good-idea-bad-idea-one-defenseman-on-the-penalty-kill/

The Avs PK has been bad this season anyways so there is no harm in trying it.

Ferland signing for depth, not sure if $4M gets the job done in UFA but i dont want to overpay him. If he doesnt sign for ~$4M AAV then i'd look elsewhere for depth (maybe depth forward as part of the return in the EJ trade, or just sign a different UFA)

Comment what kind of return EJ could get in a trade to TOR (or any other team)

Leafs really don't really have the cap for Johnson unless they do another move, Don't think Johnson long term value at age 31 for four more years anyway.

Fair enough, I wasnt expecting a big return for him anyway because of his age but I just thought TOR might want him since they need RHD. Could the cap work if we retained more or if TOR added a cap dump?

You've been reading too many CapFriendly posts. The Leafs will need a RsideDman replacing Hainsey. Trouble with the Leaf (and it's really not a problem) is they don't have players to cap dump. Marleau can't be traded and Zaitsev is OK value 4.5m.(despite what is written)
Leafs cap problem is the emergence of Marner and Kapanen. Those guys might be making a total of 4m more next season that the Leaf were expecting to pay. Plus Matthews is he a 10.5m or 12m player. My opinion, the Leafs are trading one of Kadri or Nylander in order to get get cap space so they can obtain a Dman likely a RHD. Even if only a short term solution till Liljegren and Sandin and other Dmen. are sure NHL ready.

    Ferland will cost 5+
Car wants to re-sign him but he's asking for too much

the most I will go is $4.5M but if he doesnt take it I think COL should look elsewhere like I said in the description (maybe via Johnson trade or a different UFA)

He is a 40-50 point top 9 forward who doesnt kill penalties, not worth $5M imo

i agree with you, i think he deserves 4-4.5 and thats what CAR will offer, but theres probably a team who will offer at least 5 and he knows hell get paid as a ufa

I see Mikko getting 8x 9 million at most. Since that is what UFA top wingers will be getting.. He is still RFA so loses some leverage. No way he is getting 10.5 million

Based on what? The only good recent comparable is Kucherov

in the 2 seasons before Kuch was signed, he scored 85P in 74GP, and then 100P in 80GP. He was also a pending RFA. The salary cap was $79.5M at the time of signing meaning he was given about 11.95% of the cap.

Rantanen has scored 84P in 81GP last season and this season he will likely score well over 100P assuming he doesnt get injured. Also a pending RFA. the salary cap is likely to be $83M next season which means 11.95% of the cap will be just over $9.9M.

Since Kuch signed with Tampa, who has the lowest income tax rate of all NHL franchises, he was able to take slightly less than what he is worth since he wont have to give as much up in taxes (this is why TBL has so many contracts with NTC's or NMC's as the players sign for cheap and want to stay in Florida with low tax).

So due to the higher tax rate, I rounded Mikko up to $10.5M
