I would argue that Marchand is actually very solid defensively, and much more so than Pastrnak. Marchand has many more years of experience and has played on the PK his entire career while Pasta has yet to record a shorthanded point. If playing the PK is not an indication of defensive prowess, I'm not sure what is, unless the Bruins' management has been overvaluing Marchand for the last 7 years.

What constitutes "attacking well," and what do you mean by "retrieving pucks?" And what do you mean by "before?"

I'm not trying to claim that Marchand is head and shoulders above Pastrnak, nor that Pasta is way better than Marchand. Rather, I'm questioning your analysis that Pasta is a driving force behind Marchand's success, as I think exactly the opposite is true.

Bam. Right here. Pasta is an absolute great player, and is an absolute machine offensively, but man is he not very good at defense. Marchand, on the other hand, is extremely defensively sound and doesn’t usually make many screwups.

Even if you have EP as overrated he should be in the right category as the best player. You seem pretty competent though, so I'm curious why not Horvat is overrated. People are talking about him like some kinda Selke candidate when he's pretty poor defensively. Edler could go as underrated too.

I don't think Weber is the best RHD on his team. Could Ovi go as overrated? Also think Kucherov is by far and away the #1 player in Tampa. I'd take Tara/Schwartz over Pietrangelo too.

Agree or sort of agree with basically everything else, gj

Pasta isn't looking that poor defensively though. I'd say Marchand is very much a net positive in his own end, Pasta doesn't do much right or wrong in his own zone defending, but pretty solid NZ stick check and both are monsters on the breakaway

How is Parise overrated? His pre-lockout contract sucks, for sure, but nobody really pay attention to him at all. Zucker (imo) is the most over rated Wild player. Suter is probably overrated this season too. He's lost a step this season and is getting exposed because of it. That broken talus bone injury he got last year is a career ender in most other sports.

Parise is having a sneaky good season this year: 19g/19a in 40 games this year. The guy finally got his back fixed (should have happened 2 years earlier) last season, and looks like the player he used to be.

I actually agree that Parise's been good, shouldn't be on this list imo.

I personally don't think Horvat is overrated (of course it's completely subjective though). He will be a low-middle tier 1st line C or high tier 2nd liner if he can sure up his defensive game. I don't like to think that Edler is underrated just because he's not seen as much more than a solid middle pairing guy, which is totally fair. I'm not completely sold on Petey yet, and he's gonna need to hold up his form for longer to consider him the best in Vancouver. Just not a good move to have a rookie at #1 because of how little there is to go off of (unless it's a McDavid level player)

Weber is still better than Petry (I'd assume you were referring to Petry), but Montreal is a tough one because to me it's between Gally and Weber. If Gallagher stays where he is, he has the potential to be their best play when Weber really begins to decline, but for now his stats are just too good.

Ovi could go as overrated, yes, but he shouldn't. He has stepped down his game a LOT (i.e. he doesn't drive play at all anymore), and he's still a trainwreck on D, but you can't deny his shot and his physicality that haven't gone anywhere. Still the best LW in the league for now.

Kuch and Hedman are very close, but for me Hedman takes the cake. I can understand it going either way, especially since it's not easy comparing a winger to a defenseman.

For STL it was between Schwartz and Pietrangelo. Tarasenko needs to move and prove he still has it before I could consider him the best for them (which is a weird statement because he would be gone but go with it). Senko still just hasn't sold it to me this season and I know that he has the potential to be the elite winger he was a few years ago, but he needs to get out of St. Louis to prove that. Pietro and Schwartz is kinda similar to the Hedman/Kuch deal. Schwartz is a top 15 LW and Pietro is a top 5-10 RD, so it comes down to what position you value more, and I tend to value the d-men higher personally.

If anything I'd say Marchand is underrated defensively.

And I agree that while Pasta isn't the strongest defensively, he isn't awful either.

Yeah if it's not far off there's not much to argue. Being overrated also refers to whatever your exposure to positive praise of the player is, and that can surely differ. If you asked me to pick out the best player on the Habs I'd pick Gally. Tarasenko and Schwartz are in such a weird spot, they're not even shooting 10% - combined.

Players that are primarily goal scorers are always weird. They usually get away with not driving play. Kuch and EP are pretty solid at both, where I rate the former as the far and away best winger for the last 3-4 seasons combined.
Idk if stats are you deal, but I immensely enjoy the fact that EP has the lead in Manny's shooting WAR above Skinner, Stamkos, Ovi, Laine, Matthews, Point etc this season - in that order.
I understand if there are questions about his ability to keep it up, but what he's done so far he's been able to back it up with a great shot, great shot selection and as good playmaking at this point. He was the best player in the third best league in the world last year. Not a good player, not hyped because he's young, but the actual best player, and has improved since.
