Logic Behind Trade

Nashville may need some more fire power up front, and Nash can be that for them with a long offseason to heal up from injury. Slots on first or second line. Rangers get a decent young player in Jarnkrok, and a RHD prospect in Doughtery. 2nd round pick is for this year so the Rangers have a pick before third round.

    Logic Behind Trade:

Dallas gets a top 4 defenseman that fits their system better than Rangers, and will shine with a PMD in Klingberg. Also get a late pick, and a good goalie prospect to even out deal. Rangers get Nichushkin, who is Buchnevich's buddy, and can help ease his transition.

If you were Dallas, would you make that trade? Think of it this way, lets say that trade goes through and then Jim Nill asks you right after, "Ok i'll trade you everything you just traded me for Buchnevich and a 3rd rounder". Would you accept?

If you then say yes, (because you then essentially traded Nichushkin for Buchnevich and a 3rd), then why would Dallas accept the first trade in the first place? If you wouldn't accept his offer, then you agree the return you offered for Nichushkin is not good enough to get you to accept so why would he?

Staal and Girardi have negative value, throwing a couple unknown draft picks and prospects into a trade does not make any GM say "Ok, i'll take a gamble on him and in return, i'll give you the top prospect/young player in my system......".

Valeri Nichushkin is a better prospect/player on a ELC than any player currently in the Rangers system just to give you an idea. Yes even more then Buchnevich (Not by much though).

Staal may not be a shining example of value, he isn't worth a negative amount. He was playing fine towards the end of the season, and he plays better when he's with a puck mover as his partner. He also fits Dallas' system better than the Rangers. We might not think Staal is worth a ton, but GM's may think he is. Staal at 4 million would bring back good pieces. The guy eats up minutes, and his name has value. (why i don't know) and Dallas has a need at LHD.

Nill traded a pretty decent package with high picks to Calgary for a worse player in Russell at the deadline. I don't think it's out of this world to think Staal could fetch Nichushkin depending on the pieces of the trade.

There are better values out than Stall even at 4m for 4 years, without giving up any assets. And that Nash trade....it's still 6.5m a year for two years for Nashville and you expect them to give up assets too?
6.5m is more than what is going to be paid for UFA LW. Ladd, Lucic, Hudler, gee thrown in another 1.5m they can get RFA Gaudreau. How about RW at at 6.5m Okposo, Ericsson, and for another 4m Stamkos.

The Dallas trade....Staal for Lehoeten (the goalie). Unwanted for Unwanted, for the same money....and Staal has two more years on the contract.
