I’d do it but I don’t think the Isles would do it. Maybe if that pick was at least a 2nd rounder

If Nelson for sure signs the extension, I'd do it if I were Dallas. Isles would at least consider it pretty hard, might depend on how close they stay in the playoff hunt though or if Lamoriello wants to stick to a rebuild plan not matter what. Value's pretty good though

That is not getting you Nelson. Isles will be resigning him, Trotz loves his game. It would cost either Dellandrea or Robertson.

I can't see Dallas parting with either of them for Nelson unless he was guaranteed to re-sign. Even then I'm not sure Dallas would do that. I do think the pick should be higher than a 4th though

You've overvalued Nelson a great deal. This deal could easily up the 4th to a 2nd or a late 1st and it'd be pretty close to value. But you asking for top prospects is ridiculous. Nelson isn't a top player that gets top value. He's a 2nd liner at best, probably a 3rd liner on a very good team. Those types of players don't get top prospects in return, especially when he's a UFA in a few months.

I'm sure draft slot could be negotiated, but I agree that it's not likely either of those prospects are made available. I thought Mascherin would be considered given he's closer to being ready, overager in the draft, and is having success in AHL this season as a rookie. Other 2 are further away from big club, but are bigger plans for the future.

My hope is Isles fall out of playoff contention this year, making a guy like Nelson available, as from a Dallas perspective I see him as our best fit of what could be available. Have to admit though the Isles have been impressive this season given the circumstances. Dallas needs a 2nd line C now and the next few seasons, think Nelson would look good in victory green...

I based my comments on couple factors:
1. It was assumed in the post that extension is included
2. Nelson's importance to Isles and how he is viewed by the organization
3. His performance this year

He is 1 / 2C on this team, on pace for 60 pts and has stepped up his game considerably with Trotz's guidance and trust. While I agree, he may be a 2 / 3C on other teams deep at center but with these in mind, I think the Isles need to blown out to consider trading him. Just my opinion...
