MCF 2019 Costly but Successful Trade Deadline

Created by: MCfubar
Team: 2018-19 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 13, 2019
Published: Jan. 13, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Moves for the long term future bringing in young assets with potential or draft options to build on.
Trades
1.
DET
  1. Suzuki, Nick
  2. 2019 1st round pick (MTL)
MTL
  1. Mantha, Anthony
  2. 2019 4th round pick (DET)
Additional Details:
A little costly, but the prodigal son and grandson of Hall of Famer returns to give Canadiens the big scoring wing.
2.
DET
  1. Kapanen, Kasperi
Additional Details:
Looking to the future with potential top 6 capability.
TOR
  1. Glendening, Luke
  2. Jensen, Nick
Additional Details:
Kapanen has been under-whelming, and this solidifies needs for a strong playoff run. Besides that, there is really little chance the Leafs can sign him with so many important RFAs needing to be signed. Leafs get one of the leagues best faceoff and defensive center in the league on a salary cap friendly contract, and a good right shot defenseman that will be a barging to resign if they want.
3.
DET
  1. Honka, Julius
Additional Details:
Potential is still there for a young right shot defenseman
DAL
  1. Daley, Trevor
  2. 2019 5th round pick (DET)
  3. 2020 3rd round pick (DET)
Additional Details:
Honka hasn't lived up to his 1st round projection, so Daley returns to his original team to provide stability for a playoff run.
4.
DET
  1. 2019 2nd round pick (ANA)
  2. 2020 3rd round pick (ANA)
Additional Details:
Conditional 2020 3rd round becomes 2nd round if Ducks make playoffs or Nyquist resigns with them during the offseason.
ANA
  1. Nyquist, Gustav
Additional Details:
Much needed scoring depth for a team needing exactly that, and at a cheaper cost than the other trade deadline options.
5.
DET
  1. Bobrovsky, Sergei
  2. 2019 3rd round pick (CBJ)
  3. 2020 2nd round pick (CBJ)
Additional Details:
NMC waived to get out of CBJ. Becomes 2020 1st round if Howard resigns with CBJ
CBJ
  1. Howard, Jimmy
Additional Details:
NTC waived for strong playoff team with excellent defense
6.
DET
  1. 2020 5th round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Potential scoring to a team in separate need of this.

All but one of thsese are reasonable and well thought out. So well done. But how is Howard worth more than Bob? I think Bob is a overated/overhyped. Take away his vezina years and he’s been pretty average. But i still would not swap him for Howard straight much less add picks. Yes i understand Howard has been better than he has this year. Bob still has more trade value than Howard tho.

Bob is overrated but he is better than Howie. If you want Kapanen I want Hronek (so thats a no). Other than that good moves.

I'm not saying Howard is worth more. It's just that Bob has potentially become a locker room cancer, and it gives CBJ stability with a good locker room presence.

Not spare parts when you think these are players Babcock loves and has familiarity with. LGD is one of the top faceoff men in the NHL. Come playoffs, Babcock will exploit his skills. Besides being a right shot, Jensen has become a very solid mobile defenseman. With the injuries Detroit has had on the blue line this year, he's played against the premier players and handled himself very well, as well as logging very big minutes most games.

Okay Jensen does have value to them but I dont think you get Kap, nor would I say he is disapointing.

I didn't say disappointing either. I said under-whelming. At this point, he hasn't lived up to his draft position. And the fact the Leafs have to resign RFAs Matthews, Marner, and UFA Gardiner just makes him a little harder to resign this offseason. With this trade you get two really good role players your coach wants and team needs for probably less of a cap hit than signing Kap.

Surely being underwhelming would mean he gets a cheaper bridge deal. I can see Kapanen having a short cheap prove it contract. Also I think a fair number in Leafs are liking his game.

Also Underwhelming with a 25+ goal pace and 50+ point season while having some time on PK etc. Thats hardly underwhelming, it took him a while to get here but he has proved he was worth the draft position.

I think most of the trade values seem to be pretty fair. Good job.

Babcock loves Glendening and Jensen is probably the best value defenseman in the 2019 free agent group. Earlier this week a Leafs fan did a roster for next season and he gave a an excellent reason for trading Kap: Most of the predicted Leafs' rosters have Kap in the $3m range and the team with very little cap left. So a team could submit an offer sheet for just over $4m can get Kap and Toronto with not enough cap to counter offer they would stuck with a 2nd round pick for Kap. So are Jensen and Glendening worth a 2nd rd pick?

Bobrovsky has lost value this week I don't know the whole story but from I've read Bob beat up his girlfriend and a teammate didn't like it so a fight broke out in the locker room.
As a Detroit fan i really hope we'd stay far away of that kind of drama. Even if only part of that is true, he still was left home for a game so he did do something messed up. With the young locker room Detroit has and they are still waiting to see who will become the next captain. So it wouldn't take much to to just ruin the positive attitude in the room right now.
But that is just an opinion.

I'd love kap but no way that gets him. I'll add a pick if they want or a prospect I don't care.
