Matthews and Marner wont get huge money

Created by: leafsFan1996
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 13, 2019
Published: Jan. 13, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Matthews and Marner will get paid but Matthews will not touch Mcdavid money and Marner will not get to double digits

Kucherov bought 7 (I think) ufa years at 9.5 mill after a bridge deal where he was underpaid. Marner's camp is starting at 9mill for 4 yrs. I could see 6 yrs at 8.5.

Mcdavid is the best player in the world and as great as Matthews is he doesn't deserve that money. I think he will get around Tavares money 10.5-11.5 as he should be between Mcdavid and Eichel.

last note: Do you think other teams value Zaitsev?? I think Jensen is better and would sign for cheaper but how much would we have to add to move Zaitsev? would any teams want him? would we have to take a bad contract back? If we can't move him I left enough room for Oz to not re-sign and Zaits to fill his spot

You might be right at the end but we should rather count with higher money and be surprised with lower money.

Would not cost us to move zaitsev. He would not yield any huge returns but depending on a team’s needs probably a 2nd-4th rounder. Only due to his contract. I think he’s probably worth about 3.5m.

Not completely sure about this, but according to Kypreos TOR declined a 8 year, $72M deal with Marner at last summer due to being too expensive. Now that he is on pace for 100 points, I'd be shocked if he'd sign under $10M.

Don't bother asking me sources on this. Just found this on some Finnish media outlet (yes I'm a Finn) which claimed that Kypreos stated this on Sportsnet podcast or something like that.

Zaitsev has a 3 mil signing bonus. Once that’s paid he may be easier to move because his salary will average 3.9 mil over the remains 5 years of the contract which isn’t too bad. I hope Zaitsev can be moved for a 4th round pick or something, or maybe someone with a bad contract but much less term or something.

I agree with what you've said about Marner, I could see him coming in around $9M on a 8 year deal. Comparables are Draisaitl and Eichel. Draisaitl at $8.5 and Eichel at $10, and the fact that Eichel is a centre would suggest he gets more since centres are far more valuable. & since Marner has been a little more consistent than Draisaitl, and the cap has gone up since that deal was signed, $9M seems fair.
Matthews on the other hand, I could see $12M on the low end for a 8 year deal. I think that buys out roughly 3 years of his UFA status and he may not be as good as McDavid, but with the cap rising by nearly $3.5M, it's not the same as the McDavid deal. It'd be less of a cap percentage. Matthews has a similar type of impact on Toronto as McDavid does on Edmonton. As much as McDavid carries Edmonton (he's really the only good player on that team) Matthews does quite a bit of carrying too. With Matthews it's just not as magnified because he has players around him that can chip in to take some pressure off (again, Edmonton has no one outside of McDavid). There's a different level of confidence in the Leafs games when Matthews plays, players just seem more relaxed because of his impact. Add in the fact that Matthews is much better defensively than McDavid, and a similar number is very likely for Matthews next deal.
IMO - Marner, $8.75-$9.25/7 years
Matthews, $12-$12.5/ 8 years
Might be smart for the Leafs to take a year off Marner's deal to save a bit to give to Matthews, and to not have them both UFA's at the same time again.

But god I'd love to get Matthews done around $11-11.5M as you've said

Zaitsev's cap hit doesn't change after a signing bonus is paid. Just the actual money owed does. His cap hit will be $4.5M until his contract expires

People don't understand that the actual dollar amount means less than the Cap Hit percentage. McDavid got 16.6 percent of the cap. No one in the league should ever top that as long as McDavid is the best player in the NHL. But Matthews could easily ask for 15-16% of the cap, which is expected to be 83 million. That's 12.4-13.2 million for AM.

As for Marner, if that Kypreos 8x72 declined offer is legit, he'll probably be looking at 10 or 10.5 after this season.

If the leafs get them at 12 and 10, the fans should be happy. Very good players.

Also, Zaitsev is doo doo and has 5 more years at a bad cap hit. Realistically gotta pay to lose him or take on another bad contract. If Dubas was smart and actually dealt Nylander, it'd be a good idea to try to include Zaitsev. Dubas is smart but said nylander wasn't going anywhere....

Mcdavid got 15.7%... don’t go by cap friendly. They go by signing date not when the contract takes effect.

Zaitsev has been our best shutdown guy blocks shots and plays physical. Yes his is over paid a bit but certainly wouldn’t cost us anything to get rid of. Personally I think he is worth more to the leafs than he is in trade value.

Cap was 75 mil at the time and he signed for 12.5...... That's 16.6667 my friend. Not sure why you'd use this year's cap when they had no idea what it'd be at the time of signing. But even if Matthews gets 15 percent, that's 12.45 million.

They look at projections for the cap when signing. McDavid signed a year early and considering they roughly knew what the cap was the correct number is closer to @Jamiepo 's number

Not sure how you think Toronto saying they won't go to 8@9 means he gets 10 somehow.

I meant that TOR didn't agree to $9M then, but now that's not going to be enough for Marner.Pretty sure there might be another team offer sheeting $10M+

I found the link on that thing: https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/72m-discussion-point-prior-season-marner-maple-leafs/

Kypreos is full of perpetual ****!!!! It does sound reasonable and I could certainly see Toronto turning it down after a 65 point season that was very spotty. Now the 9m x 8 is very much in the table and in hindsight maybe you take that deal but if you give out 9m for 65 point guy you set a precedent. Better to make the player earn it first.

I’m sure there are some teams that would fantasize about it but marner isn’t going anywhere.

I mean, we all think Marner is going to hit 100 points. If 9aav is what a projected 100 point Marner this is he is worth, it's not like it will jump up super high after the season. We already know he gets that, so the leafs saying meh to 9 is good. I would like 8@8.5 but if it comes to 8@8.75 or something (hell i wouldnt even mind 9 so much, just think they can get better) then the leafs are set

Also, there won't be an offersheet, and Marner wouldn't sign one if there was (he is a Toronto boy)

Stupid example, but Kucherov scored 100+ points and got a $9,5M deal from that.

Add taxes to that, and $9,5M in Tampa is around $11,1M in Toronto, at least according to this site

So considering it like that, Marner taking $10M is a discount in itself.

Some one on here mention that Mathews sign for seven so he might take less for one less year. The reason for 7 is use money from Tavares to resign him.

Kuch got that for his 3rd contract after years of dominant performance, topped off by an even better one. I'm willing to go almost as high to get the term now BC I think he will get as good or better later, so we get the cap savings long term. That being said the Kuch contract is why I am willing to go up to 9 on a 2nd contract for Marner.

But the point is, 2nd contracts are still worth less than 3rd.

Also remember that Marner has asked for 8@9. So why would he get more, if even he doesn't ask for it?

Reports from hnic is that Marner asked 8@9, leafs said too much.

I wasn't kidding when I said y'all were crazy thinking he'd get over 9.

Yes, but his actual dollars is less meaning that the cap hit might mean more for a team trying to get to the cap floor.

The whole tax thing is blown out of proportion. Any good accountant will be able to maximize the dollar amount regardless of province or state.
