Have to think that Spooner is considered a cap dump right now. Maybe if you retained 30-50%ish on him? Can't see the Canes downgrading and taking on that kind of salary while giving up a guy that's playing like he is right now.

Agreed it definitely seems like too much of a salary dump, that's an oversight on my part. Could the Oil still retain salary on a player that already has salary retained by another team since the Rangers have some of him on the hook still?

If so, then if they retained 1.3m it could be more enticing for the Hurricanes to accept.

I believe that the rule is that the salary can be traded/retained twice. If so, you could possibly do a Spooner/3rd for him?

I'd be hesitant to go right to the 3rd being that this would be a rental situation and it's not a guarantee that Ferland would stay beyond the end of the season.

That being said i'd be willing to do the 3rd if its possible to put conditions on how much salary is retained based on if the Oil were to make playoffs or even win a round. I'm not sure if that can even be done.

The problem with Spooner is that he hasn't done a thing this year. Zero value. Oilers end up shaving $2 mil off of the books for next season, getting a good player for a potential run, and it only costs them a 3rd.
