Preparing for Suzuki and Poehling

Created by: Billy316
Team: 2018-19 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 18, 2019
Published: Jan. 18, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
making some moves at the TDL to continue to build on youth . i see Suzuki on wing next year and Poehling at Center so keep this in mind when looking at who i move.

each move helps cap strapped teams make room to re-sign the Mathews,Marners,Rantanen ,Kerfoots, or in CHI case help them out of a corner they backed themselves into as 50m of their cap is invested in 4 forwards ,2 d and 1 goalie of which half them arent playing up to the expectations from when they signed their big dollar deals .

moving Crawford allows CHI to avoid moving Toews or Kane's 10.5m cap giving them room to attempt to attract Panarin back or possibly attract a Karlsson .

The cost of moving out Crawford is fair and helps CHI start to re-form its team while also letting Crawford get the Chance to be one of the goalies to bring the cup back to his home province for the first time in 25 years .
Trades
1.
MTL
  1. 2019 3rd round pick (NYI)
Additional Details:
Conditional 3rd becomes a 2nd if EDM makes SCF with Hudon playing 50% or more games .
EDM
  1. Hudon, Charles
Additional Details:
EDM adds a speedy 2 way winger who will likely play best with RNH in a shut down and PK role but has showed signs of playing 2nd line with Galchenyuk and Drouin in the past

if he helps EDM on a Cup run MTL gets rewarded if not the worst you give up is a 3rd pick you got from Davidson to add a speedy RFA winger
2.
MTL
  1. Jaskin, Dmitrij
  2. 2019 2nd round pick (WSH)
Additional Details:
WSH upgrades their bottom 6 with Shaw for a 2nd round pick

took Jaskin to make it work as i assume he's who will get bumped making room for Shaw but it really doesnt matter which bottom 6 guys WSH throws in .
WSH
  1. Shaw, Andrew ($1,400,000 retained)
Additional Details:
MTL makes room and gets a pick

WSH adds a piece at 2.5m cap for their cup defense who's been there and done it twice . Shaw will play great on third with Eller giving WSH one of the most solid third lines in the NHL (every cup winner this decade has had their third line contribute offensively to lead them there from the Carter line to the Bonino line and full circle back to the Eller line most recently )
3.
MTL
  1. Marleau, Patrick
Additional Details:
TML gets to make cap room so they can re-sign their youth and possibly upgrade their RD and maybe even make a bid on Karlsson if they can move out Zaitsev in a similar deal to what WPG made with MTL to begin the season .
TOR
  1. 2019 2nd round pick (MTL)
  2. 2019 6th round pick (MTL)
  3. 2020 3rd round pick (MTL)
Additional Details:
Montreal gets a Center who can win 50% plus to mentor our youth in Kotkanemi ,Poehling and Suzuki .

Marleau makes the move and waives his NMC because he's smart enough to know TML needs him to move out so they can keep their youth core in tact and at 39 Marleau just wants to play and prove he can still produce and MTL will give him that chance and then some as we desperately need a Center of his Caliber to help transition our youth .

TOR agree's to move him for picks to make the 6.2m cap go off the books and MTL isnt overpaying because he's a 39 year old forward making 6.2m for another season after this so giving up a 1st or a top prospect doesnt make sense .
4.
MTL
  1. Zadorov, Nikita
Additional Details:
Benn's doubled Zadorov's production while leading MTL in Blocked Shots and 3rd in Hits so he'll be an acceptable replacement for the role Zadorov currently plays .

the motivation here for COL is Adding a PK specialist backchecking forward RFA in Armia and that 2nd round pick which gives them 4 picks total in the first 2 rounds of the deepest draft since 2003 when a half dozen teams drafted core members who won cups since.
COL
  1. Armia, Joel
  2. Benn, Jordie
  3. 2019 2nd round pick (CBJ)
Additional Details:
the upside for MTL is we get a physical D who will fight that's young and plays a defensive D role which MTL needs to balance their RD which is offensive based with Weber and Petry . (they need a guy like Zadorov to stay back so they can jump up in the play easier )

Zadorov on 2nd line gives Mete ,Walford and Romanov in the future someone to help create space for them to skate as Zadorov's physical style leaves a lot of players weary about giving him a reason to set his cross hairs on them .
5.
MTL
  1. Crawford, Corey
  2. 2019 5th round pick (TBL)
  3. 2020 3rd round pick (CHI)
Additional Details:
- rights to NCAA LW Prospect Frederik Olofsson
CHI
  1. Niemi, Antti
Additional Details:
Similar set up to WPG deal for Mason except you get a player you can use instead of one both teams knew intended to retire . MTL needs a top LW prospect and FO is graduating this year and given his team isnt in a playoff spot likely sooner then later.

Niemi's played his best hockey under the Goaltending Coach Stephane Waite so the chances are high that he'll Succeed in CHI under Jimmy Waite . (as Stephane stated in a Habs tv interview he's on the phone with his brother all the time giving him guidance and hoping he succeeds )

the main motivation here though is moving out Crawford Contract to a team that wont be on his 10 team no trade list .

Crawford could be an amazing back up for MTL especially given our last ECF we collapsed after Price went down so having Crawford there an NHL starter for a decade and won the Jennings trophy both years he won his Cup so he's clearly better in a tandem .

MTL address's its issues on Faceoffs ,LD ,Hitting and Goaltending consistency worries by taking on older contracts in the TOR and CHI trades allowing them to pay less.

COL and WSH deals was about making both teams better for the playoffs without them giving up much more then 4th line /bottom pair slotted players who play a hitting role primarily with low minutes for players who can play a similar role while logging more minutes .

I highly disagree with Marleau move. You cant give up a 2rd pick for a guy who’s 39 yo. Pretty sure they will accept the offer without the 2rd pick

i gave up ours which i figure will be 55-62nd pick so fairly late similar to the 2nd TOR gave up for Plekanec's when they needed him to play a similar role .

Marleau is not only a great faceoff center and a true leader to the youth but also only 2nd to Alex Ovechkin in PP Goal's among active NHL Players . sure he's over payed but we cannot ignore what he brings to the table and the fact that his 2 biggest strengths are MTL's 2 biggest weakness's makes me willing to take the gamble regardless of cap or age .(primarily because we have cap to burn the next 2 years and need a faceoff mentor for Kotkanemi ,Poehling and Suzuki anyways )

if Plekanec is worth a late 2nd at the TDL its hard to sell Marleau as worth less then that IMO but if i could get him for less i would regardless of age as where he plays youth succeeds around him just look at SJS faceoff stats before and after Marleau then do the same for TOR as once he leaves everyones average goes down because he comes in for the tough DZ faceoffs which keeps the rest of the centers from lower their average same way Plekanec did here for years with Galchenyuk and DD
Poehling liked this.

Marleau does not waive his NMC as A) he is smart enough to realize that he has a better chance of getting his name on the Cup in Toronto he has nothing left to prove it’s the Cup he wants B) wanted the NMC so they could not move him because he wanted to finish his career there so why would he waive it, C) he does not care if Leafs need to move him, the very notion of that is ridiculous.

Crawford does not have a 10 team NTC, he has 10 team he can be traded to list, 20 he can block.

He sucks, you will likely be buying him out. Unless you want Alzner for him, that they would do.

I would also add that Toronto would never trade Marleau to a division rival.

And Crawford would not accept to be a backup. Like Fleury.

Why not? Marleau does not make Habs better than Leafs and taking 3 picks from them is a bonus. Trading within the division is not as taboo as it used to be now that divisions are bigger and you don’t play a team in the division as much as you used to. If it makes you better you do it. If it makes them worse really do it.

Just asking, have you seen any jets games recently? After JoMo and Trouba, he is our best d. He has been physical and is getting more confident. Just a matter of time before he starts putting up a few points ( hopefully) although I am happy with his current play. He is making Myers look flawless defensively

MTL is one point back of Toronto in the standings. They could very well face each other in the playoff. And you are going to help them load their guns and weaken your lineup prior that? It is not a taboo, just common sense. They did trade together last year for Plekanec, but MTL didn't care because they were out of the playoff's picture.

You want to make the same deal during the off season? Then Toronto could consider it if the value offered by MTL is better than anything else. Still not an ideal situation.

Ask Dorion how happy he was to see Matt Hoffman land in Florida 12 hours after trading him to SJ. LOL He was soooo pissed he even put a clause in the Karlsson trade to be sure he is not traded back in the Eastern Conference (a 1st round pick penality). That's a real thing.

All depends in the situation. I’d happily take 3 picks away from a division rival for 1 year of a 40 year old when i know i am better than them.
