Why would Winnipeg make that trade? They know they won't be able to keep Gardiner, why would they just throw away a 1st rounder?

I would be okay with 2nd. I think his value would be a 1st and B prospect as a rental. If they are able to dump kulikov they could consider re signing. Think gardiner would be a good fit there. Could go to any playoff team looking for A puck moving lhd at the TDL.

That's not the rare commodity you seem to think it is among playoff position teams. The rare commodities are cheap but good D, and above all, the top 4 right-handed shooting D you covet.

Also, given that Nylander has been in such a slump, he's not an attractive trade piece right now. That contract is viewed as a big risk. So you're trading a problem, a prospect and a late 1st round pick for Parayko. That the pick is conditional and not until 2020 is a good joke. You'd have to pay more than that. Parayko is the top target, if St. Louis is truly willing to move him.

Whoaaaa. I get the whole "It would be dumb for St Louis to trade Parayko", and totally agree. I would also say that Leafs fans generally overvalue Nylander, and that most others undervalue him, but you're nuts to think you'd get more than this.

Personally, with Nylander, I'd equate his value to when Boston traded Kessel to the leafs. 2 first round picks (the fact that they were both early means nothing for this exercise). So for Parayko, In this deal, you get Nylander (2 x 1st), Liljegren (1st), and another 1st or 2nd. That's 3 firsts and a 2nd, or 4 1sts. It's not even like you're taking Zaitsev.

Already ran this one by a St. Louis fan first. Liljegren is an A prospect and nylander will get back on track and be a 70-80 point player, no doubts there. I’m not trading nylander or liljegren because I want to get rid of them. Only because we could make do with kappy, not quite as good but a bit cheaper and parayko puts off our need for a rhd prospect to be ready in the next 2 years.

I’m also not getting rid of gardiner because I don’t like his play. This is just an idea I threw on top of the parayko deal to recoup some of the lost futures.

I do think you seriously under value gardiner though, it’s a common theme.

First off, on Gardiner. Just because he doesn't fit the Leafs, doesn't mean he wouldn't make a good fit anywhere else. I think if there was a western conference team desperate enough, maybe the Oilers to get into the playoffs, or the Jets or Vegas to win the cup, then I could see Gardiner bringing back something of value. I am not sure it'd be a prospect and a 1st though, but the idea that he would get moved to Winnipeg is intriguing, because they have a solid defensive group already, so he wouldn't be relied on as much for defensive stuff, as he is now. The one small wrinkle here is that the Leafs have said they will use him as their own rental. It's a ridiculous notion that they wouldn't try to move him, if they could fill his spot, say with Dermott, and add Calle Rosen to the starting lineup as the 3rd pairing LHD.

As for the Parayko trade, last year's version of Nylander would have netted the Leafs Parayko, whether people around believe it or not. Now that he's slumping bad, and carries quite the AAV and term with him, I am not so sure that's necessarily the case. It wouldn't be in the Leafs interest to sell low on Nylander anyway, but if they were to make this deal, Nylander and Liljegren should be more than enough to acquire Parayko. No draft pick would be needed.

Not from a team that does not want to move him. Yes on this site nylandr’s value is down... in real life going to a team that is not in playoff contention he has great value. I think most GM’s understand what they are getting in nylander.

The reason I traded gardiner was to keep ozhiganov in the lineup and recoup lost assets. Think he is a good fit with zaitsev. But dermott would be too.

So I would say his true value is somewhere between our 2 opinions. Maybe a 2nd and a B prospect. If any lhd go down to injury would probably be an easy move to make. Can’t help but think the value on a 40-50 point Dman isn’t a bit higher though. Maybe some sort of conditional pick on a re sign.

Nylander has 4 points in 20 games. He's talented, but he's a problem for the Leafs offensively right now. You are not getting as high a return for an out-of-form player as you would for an in-form player. 70-80 points? That wouldn't be back on track. That would be a 15-30% jump over his best seasons so far. He's young, so maybe one day he gets there, but that's the high end upside, not the middle road of expectations for the player. He may never get there, and instead is a guy who, when he is on, gets 60-70 points, but when he's not, fetches 40 points. That's more realistic than baking in 70-80 point seasons at this point in time. In that light, the contract is a risk. I'd rather have Kapanen personally.

Re: Gardiner, I didn't say anything about him. I said puck moving D aren't as scarce and valuable as you seem to think. That was true, however, some 5 years ago.
