Why would the out of the playoffs Flyers be giving up anything for a UFA.

To get a player they could easily re-sign.

You want to give up 3 former first round picks plus a future first round pick for a guy who's on your third line and can be had in the offseason? Are you Bobby Clarke?

To guarantee the player arrives in Philly and is extended yes. Hoping and waiting on the open market is fool’s gold.

Duchene is being offered/looking at an 8 year deal between $8-9.5m cap hit. He'll be 30 half way through next season. He's also having career year in a contract year. I actually really like Duchene, but not for that cost at that length at that age.

That's a lot for a UFA, especially given the flyers would have to almost go 26-5 the rest of the way to qualify for the playoffs.

Also, not sure that Center is a flyers need. Couts (sometimes Giroux), Patrick, Laughton, prospects O'Brien, Farabee, Frost, Rubotsov, Vorobyev.

So they're giving up two mid level prospects, a near top level prospect and a 1st for a UFA, they don't need and wont re-sign for a playoffs they wont make?
