I would have given him a 1 year deal. There is not nearly enough of a sample size in the NHL for me to feel comfortable with a three year deal at that AAV.

As much as Chiarelli sucks, this isn't a terrible deal in a vacuum. It's on the risky side, but it's not bad in the grand scheme of things. Koskinen has outplayed Talbot, particularly at 5v5. This deal could prove us all wrong, or it could prove us all right. Time will tell.

Totally agree with you! The hard part is the term, if it was for 2 seasons instead, that gives a better window of opportunity for all parties to evaluate a good match here.

27 games played so far. 2.78GAA .911 SV%...ok in net so far. Giant risk due to the small sample size. Let's see what happens.

a very high risk high reward move. Chiarelli is trying to keep him out of the giant goalie market this off season. Yet another move by Chiarelli to make some noise in order to keep his job and please us Oilers fans.

All you have to do is look at DeSmith contract and know this was another fine moment by Pete

DeSmith 28 games 0.917 SV% with 0.625 QS% = 1.25M AAV

Koskinen 27 games 0.911 SV% with 0.458 QS% = 4.5M AAV

Awful signing! Koskinen should be in the Hutton to Greiss AAV range (2.75 to 3.33M)

I don't know very many people happy with another wasted 1.5M cap space

I'd give him a one or 2 year contract for 3.5 million but he hasn't been horrible and it's really risky. I'm on the fence tbh.

I didn't say we were happy, I said that he is attempting to keep us content but , of course, is failing.

Only time will tell how this works out but at this point I tend to look at this signing like the Darling signing in CAR. The outcome but very very different but it's a lot of risk in my opinion.

Chiarelli trying hard to make whoever comes after him look worse.

You have to wonder how long this goes on before someone fires him.

Doesn't make sense why offer that $$. They had options in the off season.

Signing Koskinen (for too much) before trading Talbot. That after doing McDavid contract with a year left on his ELC before Draisaitl’s, who was the RFA. The terrible trades, the overpays of money and term. Can we finally be done with Chiarelli, please! This is ridiculous

The difference between the two is, of course, the track record of experience in the KHL in the previous 5 seasons (and 2 years in Liiga prior to that).

13/14 (KHL) - 41g | 1.70 | .939
14/15 (KHL) - 50g | 2.10 | .923
15/16 (KHL) - 41g | 2.42 | .915 | (WC’s) - 8g | 1.13 | .947
16/17 (KHL) - 23g | 2.08 | .916
17/18 (KHL) - 29g | 1.57 | .937 | (OG’s) - 5g | 1.62 | .932

Recent Awards:
KHL Most Valuable Goalie (15)
KHL Goalie of the Month (2x)
KHL Goalie of the Week (7x)
Gagarin Cup Champion (15 & 17)
Gagarin Cup Playoffs Best Sv% (16)
Gagarin Cup Playoffs Best GAA (17)
World Championship Silver Medal (14 & 16)
World Championship Best Goalie (16)
World Championship All-Star Team (16)
World Championship Top 3 on Team (16)

Koskinen has shown that he can excel in the 2nd best League in the World and has held his own through his first 25+ NHL game’s on return to NA. If it were someone without that extensive track record then it would be an absurd deal, but in such a context it makes a bit more sense. Compare to the 3y deal for Kovalchuk - at least with Koskinen there is 4+ months of recent NA work to support such a signing, so I would say it is lower risk than the Kings’ signing. He has shown that he can be an average goalie (and he is being paid “average”, to even a bit below). With his experience and track record there’s the possibility for more.

It’s not as bad a signing as it initially appears.

It's about $1.5M more than they had to pay him, given sample size and recent numbers. But EDM's roster is a biblical disaster and I strongly believe that Koskinen is worth it. His numbers were much better when Klefbom was healthy. Soon, they'll get Sekera back too. I see no reason why he can't put up solid numbers on a pretty bad team. Don't forget, EDM's bottom 3 lines and bottom 4 D are basically AHL/JR players right now. Talbot is gone after this season, too (obviously).

He wasn't gonna get more expensive in my opinion. I like the term and I like Koskinen, but not at $4.5M...It just wasn't necessary at all! 3X3 would've been perfect!

I'd take Koskinen all day over Darling. Darling played very well as a #2 in CHI behind a top, top team while Koskinen has played very well at times this season behind one of the league's worst defensive groups. Too much money, obviously, but I like this guy. Wait and see if and when EDM gets healthy on D.

I think everyone needs to take a deep breath on this one. Chiarelli just put Spooner on waivers which basically culminates one of the most futile moves in recent hockey memory: Essentially Eberle gone for nothing at a cost of over $3M AAV. But in judging this deal from a sui generous perspective it's not bad. A little too much AVV, but EDM has plenty of cap space to spare, right? LOL!
