BackesRask Trade

Created by: tad77
Team: 2019-20 Boston Bruins
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 22, 2019
Published: Jan. 22, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Major cap space opening, allows opportunity for big FA addition. Blues get capable goaltender/player synonymous with their culture for cheap, also get out of Jake Allen contract, which Boston buys out. Halak becomes starter.

I can also see a situation where Boston spends a little less on a marquee FA while also getting a better goalie than Talbot (Kinkaid, Howard, etc.).

I mostly tried to work the trade and create a reasonable roster around it. Please ignore depth additions/lineup locations

I miss the rating system. This is horrible, as Halák has been lately.

How does StL afford 8.65 mill being added to their already cramped cap situation

St Louis can't afford to take on both Backes and Rask at full salary, St Louis will have about $21 million or so with the reported $83 million salary cap for 2019/2020 NHL season. With 12 players signed Rask and Backes eat about $8.65 million of that. There's no way they can afford both without some retention on Boston's part.

Halak - 2.99 GAA / .899 SV%
Rask - 2.22 GAA / .924 SV%

But hey lets trade Rask and let Halak be our stater

Ignoring the trade, Erik Karlsson is in no way the FA the Bruins need.

Halak, Talbot, Allen, all essentially the same player. Above average backup

So as many have pointed out, St. Louis is going to have significant cap space opening up, with three defensemen hitting free agency. Meanwhile, no significant forward is hitting FA for them. Since Bowmeester probably is not going to be resigned, Edmundson shouldn't expect much of a raise (probably not above $4.5), and Gunnarsson can probably be brought back for cheaper, the 8.65 if worth it for them uniquely, specifically because of how David Backes fits into their team immediately. Meanwhile, St. Louis gets the starter they've needed for years.

This is true and I can't deny this. However, Rask is one of the few pieces that this team can likely move to make cap space for McAvoy, Carlo, Heinen, etc. Because he has put up good numbers lately, his value is still high, enough for the Blues to take a buyout-proofed Backes contract back, while still getting a pick back. I don't love to do this, but the only other alternative I see is trading Krecji, and I think that's a tougher move to replace. There are quality goaltenders on the FA market this year.

I made the assumption here Zdeno Chara retires. If that happens and the Bruins have the cap space, I think they would be well served to get Karlsson. That being said, I also considered Panarin/Stone in the discussion also.

Even is Chara retires, signing Karlsson still doesn't make sense. The Bruins already have a wealth of defensemen to take his spot (Grizz/Moore, Vaak, Lauzon) and he is a LHD, while Karlsson is a RHD. 11m is also SUPER expensive, and that money would be better spent towards a player like Stone, who fills a need that the team actually has (a top 6 RW), while also being significantly cheaper.

They have to replace the people they aren't resigning. With this trade they would have around 13 million dollars to fill 7 main roster positions. Backes is garbage and everyone knows hes garbage so hes going to the bench. So they have 13 million to fill 5 active spots 2 more depth spots and have over head incase of short term injuries. All for an aging goalie they may not need because they can address it for cheaper in free agency or just go with Binnington whos been really good.
