Description
A trade inspired from an article written by the athletic. The trade is modelled after the armia trade (MTL uses there cap space to acquire some picks). Here is a quote from the article on Gagner helping MTL's centre depth and maybe there powerplay.

"BOUCHARD: Currently buried in the AHL by the Canucks, and loaned to the Toronto Marlies instead of their own affiliate in Utica, Sam Gagner plays centre, statistical models love him especially when he is playing on a fourth line, and he’s a righty shot. With the Blue Jackets, Gagner played the bumper spot in the slot for one of the most devastating power play units in the league – one inexplicably dismantled by John Tortorella – that included Nick Foligno in the right corner/at the net, Alexander Wennberg on the right half wall, Zach Werenski at the point and Cam Atkinson on the left. So long as the Canadiens power play will keep Weber on the point, it will have to be built from right to left, which means a righty is need in the slot to shoot and distribute the puck. Brendan Gallagher should be able to do it, but it hasn’t worked yet. Gagner is not a pure sniper, but he had a lot of success playing that bumper role in Columbus in 2016-17. Max Domi in the corner, Jesperi Kotkaniemi on the wall, Jonathan Drouin on the point, Weber in the Ovi spot, Gagner as the bumper. Do whatever you want on the second unit, but keep Phillip Danault, Gallagher and Tatar for the first shift following the power play, whether it scores or not."

I think it's a good move for MTL. They add some depth for a playoff run this year, while also adding a couple picks to help the future. Hudon gets a fresh start in Vancouver and Vancouver also doesn't have to pay gagner the remaining $3.15M left on his contract next year and whatever is left his year. Gagner is a perfect candidate for a trade based on MTL's current situation (rebuilding while trying to make the playoffs). I don't have Gagner in the lineup because he is currently in the minors where he would likely remain unless there is an injury to someone in MTL. Regardless he would be a big help to Laval's offence.

I can't see the Habs not accepting this deal. Hudon wants to play and pretty much requested a trade. Habs are either going to put him on Waivers or trade him IMO

its a good trade but why not use Gagner for the rest of the season, even if just on the fourth line, give us a little boost for the playoffs then buy him out, just a thought

I don't see Vancouver having a cap problem. So why trade the picks.

Well it would save there owner $4M and they get hudon who is an RFA with NHL potential, not like they are trading any big picks

Your trade is well packaged but I think we could get more from a really motivated team at trade deadline or at the end of the season. Teams like Edmonton, Tampa, Toronto will have major cap issues for next year. Only three third round picks has played at least one NHL game in the last ten years for Montreal.

Looking at all 3 teams none of them have a guy like Gagner. Gagner isn't even in the NHL and he only has 1 year left after this one. Taking a guy like Russell, sekera, or lucic from Edmonton would be stupid because they have multiple years which would hurt the habs when they are finally ready to push for the cup. Toronto has nobody to dump. Tampa has Callahan maybe but hes listed as an assistant captain they will probably just keep him for the playoff run this year.

And you cant look at the last 10 years because it takes 3-4 years for a prospect to develop. Fluery and Jordan Harris were 3rd rou d picks and look promising. From 2014-2004 the habs drafted emelin, white, Weber, and andrighetto who have become full time NHL'rs and lernout and nattinen have played at least one game. They had 11 3rd round picks in those 10 years so more than a third of montreals picks became regular NHL'rs and over half played at least one game.

Lately Montreal has had good success in even the 7th round (Stapley, Primeau, and Evans look good). So the point is more picks = greater chance they find some prospects.

Lastly hudon is done in Montreal and Gagner would actually help montreals center depth and maybe even there powerplay. If kotkaniemi, domi, or danault go down there is no way chaput or peca could fill a top 9 role, gagner could.

Edmonton would pay a high price to dump Lucic. You are right, this contract is too long. Theyn could also dump Spooner which is comparable to the Sam Gagner situation. Tampa will have to take difficult decisions for the renewal of Point contract and defensemen. Toronto will have to dump Marleau at year end if he accepts in order to sign Mathews. There will be interesting Cap dump trades at year end.

You can go to this post: https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/991233. I am also trying to make some Arnia moves to use mtl cap space and not waste it like they did last year.

You're right about spooner I forgot Edmonton waived him, Toronto might want to trade Marleau but that doesnt mean they will dump him he probably has trade value and that would be an offseason move. Tampa would probably trade somebody in the offseason as well.
