Just Get a Little Better and then Find a Stride

Created by: netminder71
Team: 2018-19 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 24, 2019
Published: Jan. 24, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Don't have to be great, but be good. And work a little harder, with fewer stupid mistakes.

Target Djoos to come back week 1 March and take his 3RD spot for a few weeks then slot up at 2RD to help Orlov make fewer errors, and let Orpik/Nisky work a veteran pairing.

Caps space saved from Burky and Bowey allows for a 2019 4-5 year deal for Vrana. And allows for some planning to be done on Backie, Ovi, Holtby in the coming years (you've let Orpik retire, hopefully found a landing spot for Nisky's contract or most of it, and either kept Connolly at a home-town value deal or let him stroll off for dolla-dolla-bills, ya'll).

Develop Gersich, develop Lucas Johansen in house, sign a gritty replacement for the DSPs, Jaskin, etc 4th line role...and hav a decent team for 3-4 years more.
Trades
1.
WSH
  1. 2019 2nd round pick (ARI)
  2. 2020 2nd round pick (ARI)
ARI
  1. Burakovsky, André
Additional Details:
Same price WSH paid for Eller who needed a career rejuvenation. Picks would help free up ice time for a guy like Gersich who would skate hard.
2.
WSH
  1. 2019 5th round pick (LAK)
  2. 2020 3rd round pick (LAK)
Additional Details:
Here's a good RW prospect that has fallen down the depth chart and deserves a chance. LA is going to shuffle the expensive FWD depth at the deadline. Enjoy.
LAK
  1. Barber, Riley
Additional Details:
Conditional pick is a 4th rounder in 2020, it becomes a 3rd rounder if Barber plays 24 games at NHL level in 2019-2020
3.
WSH
  1. Honka, Julius
Additional Details:
Bowey has more NHL experience and a "possible" future offensive upside. Bowey is a little bigger frame. Both guys are bottom pairing development projects.
DAL
  1. Bowey, Madison
Additional Details:
Both are 23, while Honka a 1st round pick vs. Bowey a 2nd. Honka has 4 pts on the year vs. Bowey's 6. But Honka takes way fewer PIMs and seems to be a little more "stable."

Barber will be a good fit replacing Conno as the third line RW next year. Don't see the Caps moving him for scraps unnecessarily.

Fair point. And it would tank Hershey's season. But if they re-sign Connolly first, at like 2Mx3years, then getting a 3rd at the draft for Barber is A-ok, because there is no better 4R than DSP.

Hey. Sorry about that. You've called me out much more nicely on much dumber posts. Yeah, I think getting a couple of high seconds for Burakovsky hadn't even occurred to me as a possiblity. I think I'm fine with it. Getting a late 2nd and a late 3rd would be pretty sad.

I think there was something to your rant, and the team does need to try to add something, this year.

I liked your idea there, of trading Burakovsky and Johansen for VIrtanen. It could blow up, if Johansen ends up top pair, but if Virtanen is the better fit this year on line 3, and nobody knows where Johansen's ceiling is, it's an interesting gamble.

At the end of the day we're all fans (fanboys) and we love the game. We're armchair GMs for good reason. We can all play nice and have some fun, and for me...this place is about the ideas and the dialogue more than anything. Sometimes we get a little emotional and you were in your creative right to check my emotional outburst. I've loved the Caps since I was a little kid. I am not a little kid anymore. We're all a little to close to the drama that comes along with fandom...but hey. This is a fun place and I appreciate your comments and insights...

See we can all get along! Woot!
