I think they can do it. Marner at 9m x 8 yrs could happen, Matthews at 11m probably doesn't buy as many UFA yrs, maybe its 11m x 5 or 6 yrs.

Trade Brown for a pick and replace him with Moore or Grundstrom, or someone else on elc - there's another million. so you've got about 2.2m to find a competent RD to mitigate the risk of rushing Liljegren. Worst case, Kapanen can get moved in the offseason if they really need room.

Ennis, lindholm and brown will most likely be replaced by grundstrom gauthier/brooks and Moore. Kapoanen and Johnsson to either less money or 1 year deals to lighten their cap hits. If they aren’t willing to take shorter terms or less money they will be moved.

First three players in my opinion to move if we are too high on the cap are Hyman brown and zaitsev.

My opinion though is 500k more for both mathews and marner. They may even be closer in cap hits.

Leafs haters think Matthews and Marner deserve paid as the second and third players in the league for some reason. I think your are figures pretty accurate. Liljegren likely isn't a Leaf next year. Only way I figure "it works" if a high priced forward (not Brown) such as Kadri or Nylander are traded for cap. Leafs upgrade with one or two Dmen if only for short term. Grundstrom and Moore both LWer look to be NHLers next season. Realistic lineup, fine job.

Liljegren will most likely be a Leaf next year, Dubas has said that the plan was to have him up by the end of this year before he got injured. But I definitely don't see him starting that high in the lineup, more likely situation is him dropping to that third pair to start and everyone else shifting up.
