This is seriously just a take-back of the original trade a little over a year ago.

I think it's a fair deal overall. Considering most people thought PIT won the deal last time and it's the same exact deal now...I could see someone make a decent argument that DAL won the trade this time. It's not like his production really changed much.

Also, officially, the pick is conditional, but it doesn't really matter. Dallas receives the higher of PIT or MIN's picks in the original deal, but that pick (whichever one they get) is traded back.

I'm going to go with Pittsburgh winning this deal.
They pay a 4th for Oleksiak and traded him away for the same 4th. They acquired him in hopes that a change of scenery would bring out his true potential (he was the 13th overall pick in 2011), after using him for a season and realizing he is only a 3rd pairing defensemen, they got back what they paid. I like it.

Dallas on the other hand got a 4th for him, and after Pittsburgh paid him 2 Million for 3 years, Dallas re-acquired him. Now they are paying 2 Million for a 6th defensemen.

i'm looking at other trades: ie. Calgary and Hamonic, and i recognize that Dall traded dude to Pitts earlier, but that means that O got more experience, isn't the same player as he was. He's played for Stanley Cup champion returning to Dallas. I think Dallas won this, and Pitts, knowing how old their lineup card is, including minors, could have asked for a prospect/minor leaguer (Caamano or Mascherin ) which would have been on of their younger players, as they only have 2 under 20 in W/B.

this was a dumb deal to do from a penguins perspective, you have two defenseman who are worse that you keep on your roster but you trade away Oleksiak for not much value. Makes no sense. I kept waiting to hear what was going to be added to the fourth.

His numbers on paper would suggest a higher return in my opinion.

agreed, should have been able to get at minimum a 3rd maybe even a second, if they were just trading him for picks and not players.

What has he done since Pittsburgh gave up the 4th that makes you think he should get more?

His numbers on paper are superior to those of his last stint w/ DAL. But, there are other factors at play, like, maybe he was exposed to better offense in PIT than he was in DAL. That being said, DAL is eating the cap hit and that's particularly important for a cap team like PIT where every dollar matters. This move had to be Rutherford's cap space play. He's freeing up space for a deadline move, no doubt.

for the record I thought it was a good deal anyway when they gave up the fourth to get him last season, I would have been fine if they gave up a 3rd for him last year.

Beyond that, his numbers were better in Pittsburgh, part of this can be attributed to the team around him, but he got significantly more defensive zone starts with the Pens and still had the increase in points(his pts/g doubled last season after the trade). The advanced stats also support the idea that he was noticeably all around better after the trade. While it was only a half season so needs to be taken with a grain of salt but the possession metrics were the best of his career.
