Description

For all of those ACGMs placing Jordan Staal into deal, let’s take a step back and think about this for a moment.

Jordan Staal is 30 years old, has missed over a month of this season with a concussion and concussion like symptoms. He is on a $6M AAV deal for the next 5 years.

I love the player, and he’s been one of my favorite players on the team. He’s captain worthy locker room guy, and Selke nominee 10 of 12 years before this one.

Facing reality - he’s a middle 6 defensive minded center man, who’s good for 30-40 points a year and who will take the majority of your face offs. Is that worth $6M to another franchise? The open market would be $3-4M/year for the player. No chance Carolina retains salary for 5 seasons.

I’ve seen too many of the ACGMs to not say something about this.

Forgot to mention two things...

1 - Full no movement clause
2 - whoever takes on the contact is required to automatically protect him during the Seattle expansion draft.

I’d love to have him back on Pitt. He’s the perfect 3c for them, but that contract is wayyyyyy too much

He’s the perfect 3C for almost every team. Unfortunately he signed a 10 year contract when he was a 1/2C post-Trade with Pens. He’s paid like a 1C but should be a 3C

Ya that contract is bad. If he produced more offensively, then the contract wouldn’t be as bad. He’s still a stud defensively and on face offs

Pretty sure that if he waives his NMC, the team that he is traded to has the option of keeping it in place or not. NTCs are that way, not 100% on NMC.

Not true... if he waived his nmc to move to another team they do not have to honour it. But I do agree with the rest of your points.

NMC isn’t the same as NTC. The language is vague because with a NMC the player and the team acquiring him must agree whether the clause travels with him to the new team. This is my point...I do not believe J.Staal would agree to waive his NMC to have it voided for the next 5 years. My guess is the acquiring team would have to agree to keep it in place if he was going to go there.
