Marleau retires hence the Muzzin trade

Created by: palhal
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 29, 2019
Published: Jan. 29, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Marleau play has dropped off considerably this season. IMO he had told Dubas, "He is done". The Muzzin trade gives the Leafs a bit better chance at a Cup run. Marleau traded in the summer, adds 6.25m to the Arizona cap hit but doesn't cost any money.

I was thinking the same. After that trade happened firstly I was pumped up because Muzzin is great two-way D, then bummed because hometown kid Durzi had been traded and thirdly that Marleau retires because he has not played well this season and likely would look at it and say Im done and he would take one season out and then join the leafs in some role in management or coaching staff, maybe assistant coach to Keefe on Marlies.

Isnt Marleus contract a 35+ contract meaning that even if he does retire early he still has to be paid and count against the cap?

I cant remember the exact rules for those contracts

Marleau is only 3 points behind where he was at this point last year. If I was Marleau, I'd be talking to the coach, not the GM, and asking to be moved away from Kadri because they are awful together.

Marleau contract counts towards the cap signed after he was 35 and is till think he want to play and he is one of Mike's favorites. Muzzin is Garnder replacement we all know some team will offer him stupid money because of he offense. The Leafs will not be able to match. Bye Gardner if you need a ride to the airport let me know.

So I had to look this up but Marleaus contract will always count against the cap until it expires, so if your trading it to Phoenix you will have to send at least a 2nd round pick with him for them to take it.

No team is just going to take on $6.25 million to help the Leafs out

AZ still has Hossa's dead money on the books for another couple of seasons, so meeting the cap floor isn't an issue.

I don't think they'll be taking on much more dead cap and are looking to start being a competitive team. They already gave OEL and Dvorak raises, and Schmaltz is due to get a raise this offseason.

The cap counts but you don't pay the salary. Hence the trade to Arizona as it helps them reach cap floor without actually spending money.

As a direct comparison, Detroit traded a retired Datsyuk to them at the draft. Detroit gave them the 16th overall pick in exchange for the 20th overall pick, zona's 2nd rounder, and a hack player....so not exactly free...but Detroit moved out a $7+m contract, and picked up a 2nd round pick in exchange for moving down 4 spots in the draft

I'm not sure they NEED cap to reach the floor next year...so maybe you need to toss them a 2nd rounder or a prospect for their troubles

Hmmmm...seems like a pretty big stretch to me.

If it were a smaller salary, I could absolutely see it, but why would he walk away from $6.25 mil? More likely that if he's done, he winds up with some suspicious long term injury than just retiring.

I don't understand why you guys are citing the Datsyuk deal, given that he wanted to go back and play in the KHL, and is still playing...

If I remember correctly, Marleau is paid all but $1M of that salary on July 1st. After that, if he retires and his contract is traded, a team would need to pay out $1M but would get dinged for the $6.25 in cap. That's a tradeable contract for some team, with the leafs throwing in some incentives. We can thank Lou for this bit of creativity, and it could be the reason why Dubas felt good about going after Muzzin. There could be other reasons too, still lots of variables here, but the Marleau angle makes some sense.

I see now. After the bonus, it's $1.5 mil. I guess it could happen, but at the end of the day, with his NMC, the cards are all in his hands.

Entirely true that Marleau holds all the cards, and it could also be true that this "3 yr" contract was his sticking point right from the begining... and that a spot is being held within the leafs org for him upon retirement.. or not. But Marleau is only retiring or getting traded if he wants to, that's for certain.

Because Marleau is a plus 35., some team has to take his 6.25m. Arizona is a good choice as they will have cap space. Not so much to reach the cap floor, but if there cap is 65m. which is above the cap floor they can take on 6.25m to take them to 72.25m. well below the 83m cap next year. So this entire scenario depends on Marleau retiring, and not wanting to play any more. Arizona would not responsible for any cash output as he has retired.
But as Lenny and blowing the zone indicates.....its all in Marleau's hands.

I don't believe Marleau would accept a trade if wants to play...so the Leafs are on the hook for a 6.25m cap hit. But if he retires, because he doesn't think he is NHL good anymore, he gets his summer bonus, retires, and no team would have to pay out 1.5m cash output, because he has retired. But some team is still responsible for his 6.25m cap hit. Leafs can transfer that cap hit to Arizona with a sweetener added.
