If Habs want to be successful this season, this trade is pretty good. Value is there.

Value is there for what? Montreal for overpay?

Well Matheson is under a long-term contract and he'd be your best LHD. Furthermore, the deal is made between two division rivals, so I'd think they have to overpay a little if they want him.

I'm a Montreal fan and I think Matheson is a pretty good young player -- good, not great -- and I don't see anything I wouldn't trade away in that bunch. Hudon isn't going to crack it in Montreal, not once the next wave of prospects arrive. Evans looks solid, but he's not going to beat out Poehling or Suzuki for jobs next year. The early signs are that Olofsson might have peaked as a 17-year-old. That leaves the #1 pick this year. You never want to give up a top pick in any draft, so the question is only whether having a 24-year-old game-ready Dman more valuable than a first rounder. Given that the Habs record in the last decade when drafting in the second half of the first round has produced the likes of Beaulieu, Juulsen, McCarron, Scherbak and Poehling (who might be pretty good), I think it's a decent gamble to give it away.

That said, if FLA is feeling warmly, they'd toss in Dadonov as a sweetener. (joking)
