Laine Offer Sheet

Created by: TrueNorth
Team: 2019-20 Winnipeg Jets
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 29, 2019
Published: Jan. 29, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
In a healthy debate with someone about the Jets offering Laine a bridge deal to prove his long-term value. Talk moved to the risk of an offer sheet. As a draft and develop team, would the Jet's actually benefit from getting the 4 first round picks and signing all other free agents???

Which team would be most likely to give up 4 first rounders for Laine?

No team is offer sheeting Laine. They'd have to pay four 1st rounders, 11M for one player and probably upset a few people along the way.

Its just not worth it.

There are other really good players to be had for cheaper and without upsetting the balance in the NHL.

I agree which is why I'm in favour of the Jet's offering him a bridge deal to save $$$ to keep their cup window open and allow him to prove he can grow as a 5 on 5 player.

I don't think players of this magnitude will accept bridge deals. He's shown everyone he is elite. There is nothing to prove anymore. This is the price of drafting a superstar. boo hoo. Sticking Out Tongue

Any bridge deal offered would be declined and would only cause strife between the two sides. Just get him inked and start moving out other players. Hope for youngsters to come in and replace the more expensive vets. That is the NHL today.

He's in a massive slump and I wouldn't be surprised to see that slump continue to the end of the regular season.
I think Laine is gonna end up signing a 2 year bridge deal for money something in between what Scheiffele and Wheeler earn. Will that be best in the long run, I don't know but I think thats whats gonna happen with Laine.

What would you see him signing for as an elite sniper and mediocre 5 on 5 player?

Easily 10-11M. If you are looking at this year you'll be salty about giving it to him but just remember how he'll be when he's 25. He's having a bad year and is still on pace for 40+ goals... This team has a young nucleus. They'll be contenders for a while don't worry about that.

He's a lot more mediocre playing with Little. You have a 5v5 54% shot differential player in Little and a 5v5 49% shot differential player in Laine combining to be a 46% differential. If one of the primary goals of your center is to elevate his wings than I would pin more of this weird season on Little than Laine.

Laine has played with three centers on for more than a couple games in his career Little, Statsny, and Scheifele. With two of those numbers he puts up respectable shot differential numbers. As far as salary, I'll go a little bit less than 10-11M. The important precedents are Tarasenko, Eichel, and depending on when they sign Marner and Matthews. It's gonna be hard giving 10-11M to a winger regardless of goals.

I can see between 8.75 and 9.25 over 6-8 years
