After discussion with members of this site In re Hayes

Created by: rja
Team: 2018-19 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 30, 2019
Published: Jan. 30, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
After discussing "Hayes to Colorado" with hockey fans on this site, it seems like this would be a deal that both fan bases could swallow (though I believe NYR fans may be upset initially). Could certainly be that there is no condition, and instead it's another guaranteed 2019 pick. But that seems to be some sort of consensus on this site for the return for Hayes.
Trades
NYR
  1. Meloche, Nicolas
  2. 2019 1st round pick (COL)
  3. 2020 3rd round pick (COL)
Additional Details:
The 2020 3rd is conditional upon Hayes resigning with Colorado. Could be the 2020 2nd, but this is a more conservative estimate.

I want to add that I do NOT see this trade happening in the end anyway; I think NYR move Hayes somewhere else. But this is to just put this idea to bed.

But @BeastModeUnknown told me Hayes would only get a 2nd or 3rd at the MOST!

Then if I were you I'd give him your venmo account information and wager a bet that Hayes, if traded, will get a first rounder plus smile

depends what team he is traded to. If he is being traded to a team like NSH or WPG then he will get a 1st +, but if he is traded to COL (which I hope he isnt) then I would be very against giving up a 1st let alone prospects and stuff on top of that

But Skinner had a full NMC and dictated where he could go, so CAR had little leverage...see returns for Stastny, Hanzal, and Vermette at previous deadlines.

I am actually a little surprised by that, only because you'd be able to extend him, and it cost you expendable assets to get, but if you personally do not like him you are entitled to your opinion.

Still NYR doesn't have any leverage. Hayes isn't going to re-sign they will just get him in FA window.

It's true. Winnipeg says bye We will just get him from you in FA Window. Have fun not getting anything at all for him because you guys wish.

The Avs are nosediving in the standings and giving up a 1st for a rental isnt a very good strategy for a team that isnt going all in for a cup run this year. I would happily welcome Hayes to the team in UFA if its a reasonable price but I would absolutely not mortgage our future for a couple extra months of Hayes. Trading for him doesnt guarantee an extension and without that certainty he is not worth a 1st round pick to me

Oh yeah for the Avs to make a move like that they have to start winning again, totally agreed. If they do, however, I think this is not the worst move for them.

Look I am only trying to guess what the return will be based on precedent and demand. Precedent suggests a return similar to what I posted. If you disagree, then take a bet with @BeukeBOOM smile

Oh and with that logic, you could argue that almost every team selling with expiring contracts have no leverage.

NYR has leverage against teams that want to win this season (NSH, WPG, SJS, TBL, etc) and dont want to wait until FA

As opposed to the Hurricanes last offseason, who could only trade Skinner wherever he wanted to go.

You don't really have leverage at all. They would rather pick up someone who has multiple years on a contract for the same price rather than a guy who is going to leave right after the season is over. So you don't have leverage to pull that type of a package out of him.
