Next year with a retired Marleau

Created by: palhal
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 30, 2019
Published: Jan. 30, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Until recently I would never think that Marleau retire. But he has been poor this season, just a few months from a good 2018/19. He just might retire after this season since he no longer NHL capable. HIs 6.25m cap hit can be traded to a team with cap. Marleau just loses 1.5m in salary next year...really insignificant to him, but he fails in his quest to win a Cup in his long career.
If Marleau doesn't retire, and the Leafs retain his 6.25m hit, 6m of cap has to traded away with no cap coming back on the NHL roster

Just me opinion. Matthews has no intention to go an NHL "black hole" team like Arizona. He wants to play for a true contender in a big market. He'll give up some short term money for commercial and other opportunities . That's why he just might want a five year deal even for less money. Five years he's a UFA in New York and LA.

Signings look good except for the Oz one, 1/2 million over payment (especially when it looks like Oz may get the healthy scratch treatment for a dozen or so remaining games of this season). No need to bring Lindholm back, they'll be another UFA 4th C who'll take that spot.

Vegas baby, it's close enough to his home. And they got playoff contenders and cap space and a rich owner.

Vegas has 20m in cap space and need to sign 5 more players, including some of their RFAs. Not much cap space really. A 12m Matthews leaves just 8m for four players.

Interested in the 5 years for Matthews. Would make him a UFA. What are the odds of him leaving TO?

I think they will be a very good team. Just curious if you think he would leave to Arizona
