Cap Hit is calculated daily. Look at current cap space and the Leafs have 11Million in actual cap hit.

If they put Horton on LTIR now, they cant next year from what I know. And they need the space more next year then now IMO

Ok, here's an attempt to explain the NHL salary cap system. The salary cap is calculated per day for each team during the season based on the average annual value of everyone's contracts or AAV for short. Per the rules the sum of everyone's AAV cannot exceed $75 million on any given day. However, any leftover space on a given day can be carried over and used later like on deadline day. It isn't straight addition but basically because the Lightning had a little space for most of the year they have more money to spend at the deadline. Another key aspect is that a player's AAV is proportional to the number of days remaining. Basically, Karlsson would only count for about 1/5th of his value because most of the year is up.

First off, you have 25 guys on this roster and the limit is 23... that will put them below... but tow answer your question: cap is calculated daily which means you can "bank" cap space when guys go on LTIR or are sent down. Think of this armchair team cap hit as the average, and you are allowed to go over this number as long as you've spent time below this number.

The CapFriendly format doesn't give the "exact" cap figures. As suggested put Horton on LTIR. But Leafs want his LTIR 5.3m as part of their 79.5m cap hit so they are allowed to pay their 2019/20 bonuses this year estimated to be at 3.7m
This program doesn't quite allow the "credits" that are give when a player is on IR (which is complicated). Also with Moore up and down to Marlies it changes the cap a bit. But Muzzin is shown as 4m cap hit...when really it's about 2m as he was acquired about half way through the season.

To make things simple, nylander’s cap hit is 6.9m due to missed time and muzzin’s hit is 1.5m, first 2.5m is counted against the kings. As was already mentioned cap hits are accumulated daily. This means for players coming in and going out.
