You need to add a hell of a lot more for Schenn.

And I'd take you up on that, if Luke learns to skate. smile Kempny's 6th among LHD in blocks and plus/minus, 19th in even strength points 52nd in hits. Signed cheap for a long time, and he just keeps getting better. Brayden Schenn is 40th among forwards in hits, 124th in points, 126th in even strength points, 120th in shots blocked, and 482nd in plus/minus, at twice the cap hit, with half the remaining term. So, seriously, who adds what, and why?

Thank you for at least saying that nicely, even if you can't back it up because it's inaccurate, given the career Kempny has been having.

Great link. Yeah, what happened to Brassard, in Pittsburgh? Maybe he'll get going again, this Spring?

What do you think of the other moves?

Beats me why Brassard isn't working out. My guess is the system. Similar situation with David Perron not working out in pittsburgh but turned it around when he left pittsburgh

C’mon man, there’s a million Kenpny’s in the league. Schenn had 70 points last year, and has one of the best expected goal rates in the league. He and his line mates are shooting at ridiculously low rates so he’ll more than likely turn it around. They might trade him, but it’ll be for a good package. Barber is also 24 and in the AHL so he’s basically a throw away player.

Oh. RIght. XGF. So.... the Caps' leaders this year in XGF% are Tyler Lewington (61.11%--just ahead of Jaden Schwartz) and Nate Walker (56.63%--exactly tied with Alex Steen) in brief call ups. Walker also led the NHL in postseason points/game (1.0) and points/60 last year.

Would you like both of them for STL's 3rd worst player at XGF, Jordan Kyrou (40.57%)?

Well, by saying you want to “buy low” on Schenn, you imply that he’s struggling when he’s really just been unlucky this year. I almost never bring up advanced stats either, but I think that Schenn’s sub-par goal and point total is deceptive and should turn around. The point is Schenn is a far superior player to Kempny in what he brings to a team and what his value is in a trade.

Eli I hate to say it but I like what you’re thinking. We have plenty of dudes who can replace Kempny. If you trade kemper for Schenn it’s gonna take Kempny, Barber and probly a first

It's as if you're not even trying to prove the Blues trade is fair (which it's not)

All the stats you brought up to defend Kempny are useless.

Now I'll wait for you to misinterpret what I said and call me out for saying Kempny is bad

Thanks so much! @CastingCouchGuy I appreciate it. Team look okay?

I think before we go Kempny+Barber+1st for Schenn, it's worth checking whether Ferland is available for Jaskin, Barber and a 2nd, and whether he'd take an extra year around 3M. Schenn, last year, was a monster. This year, he's not quite keeping up with Ferland, so far, and the cap hit's a bit higher.

I started this as a puzzle to see if I could get both, plus Zadorov, but once I had Schenn, unretained, I ran out of cap space pretty quickly.

No worries. I thought Kempny was bad until pretty recently, myself. I couldn't believe that someone who didn't make the NHL until he was 26 years old could be anything other than a product of teammates and a good system. But I think some guys in the minors actually keep working on their positioning, and on little skills like blocking shots, and delivering clean hits. Kempny's one of Washington's more popular players because I think other fans understood his level of competitiveness and effort before I did. I"m sure Schenn is the same in STL, and trading him is not a popular idea.

Edit: if you want stats, I think everyone here knows how to look them up. His Corsi and XGF% are +2.52 and +1.53 above teammates. His even strength points are tied with the Blues' best current left shot defenseman. How would you go about showing that Kempny is a top four guy that the Caps rely on to keep them in every game?

I think his consistently high shots blocked numbers and his consistently high plus minus are exaclty where you see his value. Some guys, you see those numbers go up and down, but Kempny's always blocking shots, and in his shifts, his teams always outscore opponents, even when his team was last year's Hawks, for most of a really rough season. Am I trying to defend a trade? That depends.... Do I think the Caps need Brayden Schenn at 5.25M more than they need Michal Kempny at 2.5M? Hmmm....
