What is this fascination about offer sheets? Highly doubtful Marner would sign it. 99% sure Marner would take less money to be Leaf, for life time financial benefits and benefits . It would best to make a 2019/20 roster or even 2020/21 roster to see how the cap space is for the Canucks.

As guys from NHL network said.. If you offersheet someone on the Leafs. They would not come at you right away, but they will come at you someday and do it to you in higher capacity.... Meaning that they would go after Pettersson.. BADLY and its gonna hurt Canucks.

can they afford to match though? knowing Matthews will sign for north of 11 million, and they have 8+ contracts expiring besides... so what, trade Nylander?

This is early July so priority 1a Mathews 1b marner and go from there, and spend the rest of the summer building the team with what you got left

oh for sure! but that's 3 years to dump contracts like rousell, beagle, gudbransen, and most of all eriksson's
also keep in mind other expiring contracts; Edler, Tanev, Sutter
that's north of 30 mil cap space (more if the cap goes up like they are projecting)

plenty of room to sign Petterson, Boeser, Byram and Hughes

in my opinion smile

They would go to Bennings office. Dubas would slap him and put him in rear naked choke while Lawrence Gilman would sign Pettersson and rewrite Marners contract to be on the leafs and have Canucks retain half of it to fit salary cap.

FWIW Leafs easily match a $10 million offer sheet on Mitch Marner, He's going to get close enough to that any ways.

The problem is that the Canucks can afford to sign Pettersson to a mammoth contract if he so chooses to accept the Toronto offer sheet - which I highly doubt he would. It’s absurd to think that the Leafs could retaliate to any offer sheet. Sure, they could offer sheet an RFA of that team, but who cares if because of Marner or Matthews that team is a contender now? The player wouldn’t agree. Now Marner would never in a million years sign a Canucks offersheet, but if a team did, the Leafs would just live with it. Maybe try to retaliate, but that will only put you in bad standings with other GMs. The only offer sheet concerns on the Leafs are Ozhiganov, Johnsson, and Kapanen. Especially Johnsson. He’s arbitration eligible this year, so he might rather sign a 3-4 million offer sheet for 5-3 years instead of a one year prove it contract.

No, not from a Leaf fans view from realistic view. Even ex Leafs from average to good team are idolized in LeafLand and with those financial benefits. Never mind the benefits that players from the Cup winning 60s. Beside he sleep in his parents basement and save a few bucks.

Actually I think the Leafs "retailation" wouldn't be on high end players but low end RFAs...Leafs would offer more than Canucks would like pay due to the compensation being so low. It would mess with Canucks cap for years. And really you really can't cap dump so good contracts as you suggested earlier.

I also find it extremely ironic and hilarious how there was all this talk that there was a "real chance" that Matthews could get an offer sheet in the off-season, but then once there's reports that it looks like he could sign an extension before the trade deadline, all of a sudden now it's teams offer sheeting Marner.

... it's just media creating articles for reads and ads and money. I wouldn't believe any of it. Marner grew up a hardcore Leafs fan and would probably be the one guy to leave a little bit of money (not much) on the table, to sign long term and be a superstar on his childhood favourite team and possibly be the biggest superstar in Leafs history. That's something that no other team can offer. Tavares did it. With the type of leader he is, I wouldn't be shocked if Tavares has talked to Marner about taking less to help them team and to stay on the same line as Tavares long term. I don't see an offer sheet really happening to anyone. Toronto is just the hot market to get people talking and get ready and money for media. It's a joke really
