Trade Deadline - Using Cap Space

Created by: CaptainFlynnt
Team: 2018-19 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 1, 2019
Published: Feb. 3, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Vancouver trade: Edlers value is based off of the Muzzin trade, however it is also lower because Edler is a UFA this year.

- Edler is a huge upgrade for MTL's top 4. He is physical and currently on pace for ~40 pts. He could play with Weber or Petry (I'm thinking Petry since Mete and Weber compliment each other well). If Edler works out maybe MTL will be able to resign him, if not Gardiner will also be a UFA this summer.

- Gagner is a cap dump for Vancouver. They are paying him $3.1M to play in the AHL. Vancouver would save $2.125M next season if they can move him. Gagner isnt too far off a 50 pt season for Columbus in which he was a big producer on the powerplay. He might be able to help MTL's powerplay, and if nothing else he is good center depth and a right handed faceoff guy.

- Hudon is a guy I like in MTL right now. He is good depth but he wants / needs a change in scenery.

- Fluery is having a solid rookie season in Laval. He projects as a 3rd pairing defenseman. The habs already have Juulsen (assuming he can recover from his injury) and Brook as RD prospects so he is expendable. Also he is eligible for the Seattle expansion draft, assuming MTL protects Weber, Mete, and Juulsen then Fluery would be lost anyways (Petry is a UFA that season).

- The second round pick is included and also somewhat replaced by the deal with Edmonton which gives MTL a 3rd and possibly a 4th round pick.

- Edmonton desperately needs some cap space. Spooner is currently playing in the minors with a cap hit of $2.075M. Moving him frees up $2.075M in cap space for Edmonton next season. Spooner played for Julian in Boston and put up 49 points. Julian might be able to help him get his career back on track.

- EDM gets peca. He is a depth guy with really good speed (might help some of edmontons slow guys out.) If MTL is adding Gagner and Spooner than Peca is expendable.

- The 3rd round pick is compensation for MTL taking spooner's cap hit and the conditional 4th round pick is included in case Spooner is unable to replace the loss of Peca. Also the 3rd round pick is a 2020 pick which has slightly less value.

I know MTL said they wouldn't be going after Rentals, but the team is currently 3rd in the Atlantic and adding Edler would fix their biggest weakness. If they can manage to resign him on a 4 year deal then this trade is definitely worth it. Moving forward, MTL will not have much cap space next year to sign any big free agents after resigning Lehkonen and Armia, Byron's extension kicking in and resigning Edler or going for Gardiner. However the following year they will have ~$9M off the books once schlemko, gagner, and spooner's contracts expire and Mason's buyout penalty is over. They only have to resign Domi and Mete that season. They could gain even more cap space if they can find a trading partner for alzner however they would have to retain salary.

ADDITIONS
- Edler, LD (Top 4 Defence)
- Gagner, C/RW (Bottom 6 C, Powerplay Specialist)
- Spooner, C/LW (Depth Forward)
- 2020 3rd round pick and conditional 2019 4th round pick.

SUBTRACTIONS
- Hudon, LW/RW (Depth RFA)
- Peca, C/LW (Depth Forward with speed)
- Fluery, RD (Projected 3rd pairing Dman)
- 2019 2nd round pick.

Change in cap hits for MTL = - $8.775M for this season, and possibly more for next season if Edler is resigned.

Well done. Fair value. I can see both teams accepting and everyone getting value out of these deals. ??

It's a full no trade. Frustratingly, Benning is not even considering trading him.

This trade is reasonable. I like Fleury. Vancouver has lots of cap space so it doesn't need to dump his salary. Overall, I think this trade is good.

Not much cap space to sign free agents cause of having to sign Armia eh? What's Armia worth in a trade?

Great trades, makes sense although its true that the Canucks don't really have cap issues like the Oilers do so they might not be willing to pay a team to take Gagner's contract. Spooner ++ to Montreal makes a lot of sense given the Oilers cap situation, and if they get a speedy Peca back it will help them still more.

Gagner to MTL is just a bonus for Vancouver. I actually think Gagner would be a good fit in MTL. But for Vancouver, with Edler and Gagner off the books for next season they could take a big run at a good UFA. Every million helps, A chance to play with pettersson is a good selling point to UFA's.

Not much cap space if they resign armia AND lehkonen and Edler and once Byron's extension kicks in and if they absorb the cap hits of gagner and spooner. Armia is a beast for MTL he is staying.

Armia is a beast, he's missed in Winnipeg.

Armia won’t make more than 3 million.

These moves would make a lot of sense and seem to be pretty good value but the elder deal is a little low imo. I think he would cost a bit more because as mentioned above Vancouver doesn't have cap issues so adding gagner to the deal is not that much of an incentive for them. I would say either another pick or a prospect similar in value to fleury or maybe a bit lower.
