Could probably get a better D return for Kapanen than that. Not saying Mayfield is bad, but just that there are better options out there.

TOR can get a better price for Kapanen imo.

Would not make this trade but I would be interested in his off season value. Last time I asked this question I received a rather low value. Which is weird for this site lol.

My parameters are a RhD signed for 3 years or more at $2.5M or less. That kinda limits the field. Next year's Maple Leaf righties are Zaitsev and Liljegren and free agents or someone acquired via trade.

Then assume that there would be draft pick adjustment. The issue is, does Mayfield look like a viable NHLer? Particularly now who can play in the top 4.

As I know you might imagine, this trade solves the financial problem as long as Matthews and Marner can be re-upped for $20M. The question is, does Mayfield address the on-ice issue? I.e., can we succeed with Zaitsev, Mayfield, Ozhiganov and Liljegren?

Well then, maybe a counteroffer as such

New York Islanders
Kasperi Kapanen
Nikita Zaitsev

Toronto Maple Leafs
Scott Mayfield
Josh Ho-Sang
2020 3rd round pick (NYI)

NYI gets a great fast forward and a solid d-man who might be a tad overpaid, whilst TOR saves some money and gets some potential assets to replace the traded players.

I would jump at that, and I hope that Dubas would, too.

Most likely Dubas would like to take Kapanen out of that deal. Just swap Zaitsev to Mayfield or something like that.

Are these the same Toronto fans who keep posting AGM's signing Kap to a $2.5M 2 year deal? LOL

Isles have no interest in trading Mayfield. He has blossomed this year. Cheap contract, plays physical game, avg 19min and +16. I would say that makes him more than viable...

Kucherov, arguably one of the top 5 players in the league is signed for 4.7m x 3 years. Most agm’s have him at 3x3m but I find 2x2.5m to be better for both sides.

Finally an isles fan....

Clearly wouldn’t be moved during the season but what is he worth in the off season in realistic Lou terms?

Lou and Trotz requires fundamentally sound players that dont deviate from the system. I think Mayfield plays very well under that structure. With that said, we need top 4 scoring wing that can play with Barzal. Dont know if Kap is that guy, I honestly havent seen him play. Think the Isles could be convinced to package Mayfield into a larger deal to get higher caliber player.

Kucherov signed that 3 years ago when the salary cap was under $75M plus that's in Florida which makes a difference with take home pay. That same $4.7M is $5.5M most other places and in today's dollars against the cap would be closer to $6M. Kap isn't close to Kucherov and it's a dumb comparison, but Kap is worth more then $2.5M all day long. If Toronto doesn't think so, then they should trade him because a lot of teams think so and will pay TOR for that value.

I think the counter would be brown zaitsev and a 2nd for mayfield alone but I think if leafs are struggling for cap space your first trade is certainly an option.

2.5m x 1-2 yrs is exactly right for a player like kapanen who is on pace for 48 points.

Show me a few wingers that are putting up 48 points and only making $2.5M a year and I'll show you a lot of wingers making more then that and putting up less then 50 points.

Show me just one who had 10 points over their previous 3 seasons....

Kapanen could very well ask for more and be traded. Leafs stand point will be short term show me deal.

Funny that Johnsson who has been far more productive gets smaller contracts and nothing is said.

Max for kappy is 2x3m max for Johnsson is 2x2.5m. If they are willing to take longer terms on their bridge deals I could see those numbers rising but I don’t Think it is in the best intrest of the team or player.

Really? He’s outplayed Pulock and Leddy all year and is making almost nothing. He’s actually been better than Pesce as well.

Mayfield has been excellent this year at a very low cap hit. I'd like to keep him.

Kapanen would be a good fit, but I don't think I'd give up more than CGY's 2019 2nd.

I don’t know who the Isles fans are in this post but there isn’t a shot in hell the Isles are trading Mayfield!!! He’s great defensively signed for years to come and only a $1.4 mil cap hit. Thanks for the parting gift Garth!!

Ah, and for the Zaitsev add-ins for this deal. Every single Leaf trade on this site is usually a way for them to dump him because he’s that hated. Thanks, but no thanks on him. Lol
