True, I sorta pulled the numbers for those two out of my ass because I was just trying to make a point for some people that building a good team even with anchors like Marleau still on the team is, surprisingly, possible.

Take your own advice. Marner isn’t signing that

Okay, even if he does, it's like 10-10,5 and that leaves the Leafs with 2m+ in capspace so it's a non-issue.

Zaitsev is at least usable in the right system Sticking Out Tongue

This! The leafs have a cap crunch, they're not in cap hell. so, we need to trade Z and maybe brown. amybe Hyman. np. Marner, kappy and Johnsson left to go and then they more or less have the next 3-5 sorted out, depending on the bridges to Kappy and Johnsson. Plug and play with some marlies and bobs your uncle.. besides, Moore > Brown, imo. The leafs are in a fine spot...

I mean, honestly? Johnson-Zaitsev could work if the Leafs couldn't find anyone else and the right pieces were involved.

Genuinely curious, would you do a deal starting with Zaitsev/Rust? Afaik Rust's deal isn't exactly well-liked in Pittsburgh.

He doesn’t IMO and the reason bring is Kap brings a defensive game that AJ doesn’t. Kap kills penalties so he’s more valuable. I’d actually rather they trade AJ instead of Brown. My reasoning is AJ will make more money AND they have too many of the same player right now. Not to say they are equal players but Matthews, Marner, Tavares, Kap, AJ, Marleau, Nylander all play very similar games where Brown and Hyman add a different element. I also think you’d get more for AJ than Brown.

Ah, I see. I've just seen quite a few people unhappy with the deal but I guess there's always more to it
