Description
Saw this trade suggested on someone else's Leaf post earlier today so credit to that person - pretty sure it was @palhal but not 100%

Nylander and/or Bailey become 2C. The other is 1RW. For the sake of this I chose Nylander to drop down but either is possible

Wasn't my idea. But all the power to you if you think it'll be Zaitsev or Marleau you're shipping out to free space for Marner/round out next year's team...

The talks would probably start with Wahlstrom + Pulock and add from there, so I doubt there would be much interest from either side for a deal

I liekly agree, as would Dubas on the offer in the post though. That's why so few stars get traded. (Justifibly) Nobody wants to lose their top prospect, but Nylander was a HIGHER pick than Wahlstrom just a few years before who has already proved himself to be good. For Toronto, it wouldn't make much sense to move out a star instead of just finding a way to move a less important piece (Zaitsev, Brown/Hyman, etc.)

No it wasn't me that suggested this trade. But I have been an advocate of a Nylander trade...for cap reasons for months now. Unless Marleau retires, Nylander is the logical trade for the Leafs and as you suggest it has to be for very cheap players, players on ELCs or picks. I think Nylander can be an effective centre. If he's told in July he can practice all summer and really get his body and head into the new position. And don't let him vacation in Sweden all summer. Make him work at his hockey with some NHL guidance in North America.

If Marleau retires would he still remain on TML's books? I thought that was in the CBA. Leafs would have to move him to like Arizona or something. I don't know if he walks away from $6.25M even if they won the cup this season though

His contract pays a signing bonus on July 1 2019 of 3 million then the rest of next year his salary is 1,25 million so if he retires after July 1, 2019 he is only walking out on actual salary of 1.25 million. In order to avoid him being on leafs books he would have to be traded to low cap team before he retires.

Isles are not trading Mayfield. He’s a defensive steal.
