Sell high on Kapanen

Created by: Claymish
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 5, 2019
Published: Feb. 5, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Middle prediction of salary cap according to multiple sources is 83.5. Trading Kappie would be hard, but if they could pull off this deal it would be worth it. Carolina would over pay to put Sami's son on his dad's old team.

They can literally offersheet him at 4mx5y and it’ll cost them a 2nd round pick. Car has 0 reason to give up anymore than a 2nd.

You mean a 1st (top 10-15 pick) and a 3rd, literally.

They would need to move a big contract to match that. And paying kap 4 million isn’t probably ideal.

Fair enough. But again it wouldn’t be easy and they should try to sign marner ASAP so they know what moves they have to make as early as possible.

I'm fairly sure you can't trade a player for 1 year after matching.

But what I do believe can happen is teams get 1 week or so to match. In that week they can negotiate with the signing team for extra payment to not match.

Also the Leafs can afford to match Kapanen at 4. At 5 maybe not.

At 4 they would have to either pay someone to take zaitsev or trade 2 of Johnson, brown, and hyman

It sounds like Marner camp wants to wait till the summer I wonder if they want offer sheets to increase his salary

It's an incredible statement on the growth of salaries of top line forwards in the NHL that fans around the league are now trying to shut down trade conversations by asking Caps fans to add Kuznetov, just two years after he made headlines for being paid so much more than he was worth, due to huge contract offers from nationalistic teams in the KHL.

IMO Matthews is closer to kuzy than he is Mcdavid. I wouldn’t pay him more than 9 million. He under a ppg career player

He's second in gpg since he entered the league and 6th goals. He joined the league right after being drafted. He is that good

He’s 21 and again he’s less than a ppg player. You can choose to focus only on goals but even Mcdavid is close to him in goals/gm and he is a 100 point player. Night and day. Matthews is good but people need to let the paint dry w this kid. He’s far from an ovechkin scoring and far from a Crosby / Mcdavid skill wise

To be clear I’m not trying to diminish Matthews accomplishements but he’s more of a stamkos right now. But even stamkos was able to score 51 goals his sophomore year

Four active players have put up 30 points in one postseason. Kuznetsov is the only one under 30, and his 32 is the second highest total of any active player, behind Malkin, but ahead of Crosby, Couture, and the rest of the league.

Who was it you were talking about, again?

Five in six as a rookie. Two in seven as a sophomore. What is it Caps fans say about Burakovsky? It's the trend that determines trade value?

You're right he is a level below Ovechkin in scoring but he leads the next level. He literally had the second best goals per game in his first three years that any player had had since 2005. Right behind Ovechkin.

https://www.hockey-reference.com/play-index/psl_finder.cgi?request=1&match=combined&year_min=2006&season_start=1&season_end=3&rookie=N&age_min=0&age_max=99&pos=S&is_playoffs=N&c1stat=games_played&c1comp=gt&c1val=165&threshhold=5&order_by=goals_per_game

He did that also a year younger than Ovechkin (Ovechkin was blocked by the lockout from playing his first possible season)

He's 6th in point per game for a player in their first 3 seasons over that time.

https://www.hockey-reference.com/play-index/psl_finder.cgi?request=1&match=combined&year_min=2006&season_start=1&season_end=3&rookie=N&age_min=0&age_max=99&pos=S&is_playoffs=N&c1stat=games_played&c1comp=gt&c1val=165&threshhold=5&order_by=points_per_game

So second best goal scorer and 6th best point scorer for a player on their ELC since 2005, aka the salary cap era. He is that good.

By the way if you make it only players who did it straight after being drafted like Matthews? He jumps to third in ppg and 1st in gpg.

The bottom line is Matthews is that good. He isn't Crosby, Ovechkin, or McDavid, but he leads the next tier.

And again specifically to your quote of PPG, his ppg is 6th best for first 3 years since the lockout or third best (behind Crosby and McDavid) if only looking at players who entered the league immedistely. His ppg in his 3 seasons in order are 0.84, 1.02, and 1.21. His total ppg is 0.98...

He’s more comparable to stamkos... still very good but not worth near what he’s making. Not even close.
