Montreal isn't going to put themselves in cap hell to get a 1st line RW. Not to mention giving up four 1st round picks is an awful idea.

What cap hell? Next season we would have $12 million in cap space with only Domi to sign and the 4 first round picks are likely to all be from 20-32 with Marner on the roster.

You think that sounds like a good idea? help out our rivals while paying top dollar for a winger? No thanks.

doesnt matter if he signs, you just need to throw money at him so the leafs are forced to move Nylander or someone by overpaying marner

If he doesn't sign the offer sheet, then the Leafs don't have to match...

Why wouldn't he sign $11.5 million contract? His agent has already come out and said the Leafs were low balling him and that he is worth every penny Mathews is, which isnt a price Toronto is willing to pay and this would put leaverage on them

Until Leafs don't match it. We solve their cap issues and they get four 1st round picks.

How does it help the Leafs? It takes away their top point producer and the player that actually drives that team. It gives them cap room if they dont match and the 4 first round picks will be late picks. MTL would get a 100 point a year player, powerplay would be solved, thier prospects would have more time to develop and sign them when Marners cap % is smaller in 3 years.

Honestly...Dubas would immediately match that offer sheet and move on. Not saying the 4 first rounders wouldn't be nice or that Marner should get $11.5m on a 6yr term....but I don't think the $11.5 AAV is so egregious that they'd walk away from marner. If offer sheets start hitting over $12m then maybe it makes him pause and think about it...as it stands now, I'm sure Dubas is preparing to move some complimentary pieces out to fit Marner in anyway and probably assuming he's going to be around $10m...so an extra $1.5m won't make them let him walk

He likely won't sign an offer sheet, since he wants to play in Toronto. Plus Toronto would just match that. Someone is really going to have to overpay Marner for Toronto not to match.

Toronto is his home town team, he would sign a $10 x 8 contract imo

I think he'd do $10m x 5yrs....I don't see him taking a lower AAV than Matthews on a longer term

Doubt if Marner would sign for marginally more money with than he would sign for the Leafs.. Shaw can't be moved without similar money coming back to Montreal. Teams don't take on cap, because the other teams want to get rid of it.

You clearly don't understand how offer sheets work. Teams can't just wait till July 1 and then say "Offer sheet! I declared it! That means he has to sign it!" When a player is RFA, he will negotiate with the team that holds his rights, if the offers from the team that controls his rights doesn't play fair or lowballs the player, then the player must direct his agent to seek out an offer sheet. Once that happens teams can prepare offers and present them to the player. After that the player must then decide to sign on offer sheet and then a team will have a chance to match that offer.

Maybe because Marner is already on record, Saying that he wont sign an offer sheet. He's a Toronto kid and has always dreamed of playing for his hometown team. No way he's leaving the Leafs for the Habs.
