Dealing for Nyquist and Glendening

Created by: DOTFAM
Team: 2018-19 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 6, 2019

Description
I’ve posted a lot about these guys already but I really do think Nyquist is the perfect fit for the Sharks at the deadline. He’ll slot in on a Couture’s left.

I think packaging him with Glendening is totally feasible and Luke would be an excellent 4C option now that Brian Boyle is off the market. Moving Karlsson’s contract for Glendening’s may be an odd move given the Sharks cap crunch this offseason. However, he is 200k cheaper and adds excellent Faceoff and PK skills, something I think the Sharks could use right now, no matter the term in his contract. He’d be an upgrade over Melker and allow for Goodrow to slot in on his more natural RW position. The addition of Nyquist then pushes Labanc to the 4th line, where his playmaking will cause matchup problems.

Just looking at these lines top to bottom gets me excited. I would be very interested in finding out what others think of the value going over to DET

Detroit probably isn't aiming to make the playoffs before 2021, which is also the Seattle expansion draft year

They got burned by every 6+ year contract they signed to players who would be in their 30s when it finished.

I'm not a Detroit fan, but their one clear option is to tread water while they suffer the weight of their own contracts. Come 2021 they could have a stellar prospect pool and the most cap space in the league to add vets with.

They probably don't value bringing in anyone older than 22 today
Melker = 28
Ryan = 25
Gregor = 20, 111th overall / 4th round pick in 2016
2019 2nd Rd FLA = 18

I'd say yes for DET to take that high 2nd for one of Glendening or Nyquist, but I don't know about what they need to maintain a positive locker room and avoid Oilers disease.
Gregor might be equivalent value to an average result for a 2nd/3rd draft pick, but I can't vouch for that.

Seems fair, definitely an honest trade attempt with some effort. No idea if that's the high bid this year, but DET won't need to bluff or guess to get that.
I love to see SJS go all-in, they've already committed so much to winning the Stanley Cup this year. There's no refunds and no turning back now.

Detroit has zero need for melker.

Gregor has some value, as being top 10 in the WHL in scoring is good, but he is also an overager, which lowers that value. He is not a blue chip prospect in the level of the Chwins, blichfeld, merkley, or even gambrell.

a 2nd is a 2nd. It will likely be the sharks 2nd as the better of the FLA or SJS second goes to Ottawa.

Ryan is respectable, but also not that attractive for a team of detroit's age. Im just not sure that a #8Dman, an overage midlevel prospect, and a 2nd gets nyqist. I would think the price for nyquist is likely a tp flight prospect and a 1st. If the sharks dangled chekhovich, merkley or perhaps blichfeld, along with the second and mayve another later pick (4th or 5th), that might be competitive.

Boyle just went for a second. Is Nyqist only worth Gregor and Ryan more?

I like the nyqist target, but Im not sure such a fleecing is possible. (I'm still holding my breath for Panarin or Stone...)

Its very much in line with what I figured...

Detroit didnt need Melker. Gregor could have gone, but it wasnt just a second, and glendening wasnt part of the trade.

Im not sure if you are trying to toot your own horn, or just asking for opinion. If trying to toot your own horn, you might look at your proposed trade and realize that yours was nothing close to the real thing except that it included nyquist and a 2nd.

If looking for opinions: I think the sharks did extremely well! Getting Nyquist for a couple 2nds (or a 2 and a 3) is awesome, particualrly since boyle went for a 2nd and Nyquist >>> Boyle. However, when Duchene went for a 1st and a couple lower prospects (and a conditional 1) the market was set low. Then Dzingel goes for two 2nds, and it was clear that 1st rounders were not getting thrown around this year. Stone will get one and then some, and hayes might too, but the buyer list is shorter this year than the seller list, and the prices are lower than usual. Dougie took advantage of a favoriable market, and get a very good player for a pretty low price...

the other nice thing for the sharks is that all this renting (EK65 and Nyquist) gives them many avenues going forward. If EK65 does not stay, they have other good talent in the org with exclusive bargaining rights until july 1. Dougie is extremely good as resigning internal talent. He may end up keeping nyquist this summer if EK walks.

Completely loaded up for this year and lots of options this summer. Dougie has himself in a very strong position. Lots of pressure on scouts to figure out the future (signing euro FA's, Jr FA's, late draft picks, etc) with so few good picks for the next several years, but that's never really been a problem before.

Not a bad deal for both parties, I was kind of surprised that Gus waived for San Jose. With his Wife expecting their 1st child in May. But a solid return. Hopefully the Sharks make it to the cup finals or resign Gus. So we get a 2020 2nd as well.

The wings needed to move him and SJ is the best destination possible. Top contender for the cup. Great team culture. supportive and kind management. sunny and warm :-)

Getting the chance to be traded to the sharks is a score for GN. Its either that or upset the wings by not waiving and screwing them out of the return they want for him. That creates a pretty terrible relationship with him and the team, and he hasnt earned the franchise tag to do that.

I hope you get a 2020 2nd as well :-)
