I think this could be good for Washington.
"EDM
Bowey, Madison
Kempný, Michal
2019 3rd round pick (WSH)
Additional Details:
RFA Andre Burakovsky
WSH
Nurse, Darnell
Mantha, Ryan
2020 2nd round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
2019 1st round pick"
Off the top of my head, Kempny is outscoring Nurse this year, and has better blocks and plus/minus, but Nurse plays bigger minutes and hits more?
Burakovsky has more goals than all but seven guys from his draft class, so he's worth a late 1st pick, easily.
Bowey for Mantha is.... about even, by potential, but Bowey, like Kempny, is on a better contract.
The Caps draft pretty well, though, lately, so if they are fairly confident they can steal another great pick out of the 20s this summer, or package Edmonton's with theirs to move up, then they could see that as a chance to get someone as good as Burakovsky, but who doesn't even have to start their ELC for another year or two.
The cap space almost evens out, and the Caps get a roster spot to call up whatever prospect fits the bottom six spot where Burakovsky doesn't really fit, so the real question is whether Nurse can play well with Carlson. I think Carlson was effective when paired with Alzner and Orpik, and Nurse seems like a combination of both of their strong points, when they were young. He'll cost more than Kempny, but I think if anything he's even more of a legit top pairing LHD.
Between Nurse, Orpik, and Siegenthaler, the Caps' defense could play pretty rough. If Mantha ever makes the team, he replaces Bowey. If not... flip him.
