Description
The Panthers essentially swap UFAs and pick up a 2nd and a prospect for Hoffman.

The Jackets get Hoffman as a possible replacement for Panarin and Brassard to solidify the Center position.

Detroit gets a first a young goalie and Duclair for Jimmy Howard.

Way over pay for howard. I would be surprised if he gets more than a 2 and 5 or a 2 and prospect

Why would the Panthers who are 12 points out of the playoffs trade for upcoming UFA Bob?

Because the negotiating window gives them an advantage to what is a clear weakness of Florida. Yeah, Bob will be an UFA but if they choose to pursue him then they have to worry about getting into a bidding war with other teams. Florida can shut those teams out by dealing now.

It's not such a big advantage now. The non "owner " teams, have one week before July 1 signing date to talk to upcoming UFAs. The only real advantage that the "owner" team have is they can offer an eight year contract as opposed to a seven. If Florida were to offer Bob eight years.....well that's crazy.
