WSH would love this trade, but probably not enough value for COL here.

Megna and Pelly have nearly no real trade value. Burakovsky is maybe a 2nd in value. That leaves Niskanen. ...For Barrie, C.Wilson and a 5th.

Barrie is a 5 year younger, somewhat better version of Niskanen. Why would Colorado make that swap? Even for argument sake, lets just say Niskanen and Burakovsky for Barrie, and that is stretching it HARD from Colorado side. That leaves Megna and Pelly for Wilson and a 5th. Pelly for the 5th. That leaves Megna for Wilson. Out of those 3 groupings that I did here, the only one that Colorado honestly considers would be the Pelly for a 5th.

The Avs have half a roster with any substantial NHL experience and a bunch of guys getting about 20 points a year. There are a couple awesome players, and then scrubs behind them.

The trade in my mind is Niskanen and DSP for Barrie, Bura for Wilson, Megna is there just because he's played in the NHL before this season, and for all I care the 5th can be taken out. Add a pick from the Caps side if you want, but Barrie shows up on the rumor mill every year, and he doesn't have much more time with this team with his contract. Bura is an upgrade on Wilson to the same extent that Niskanen is a downgrade on Barrie. Yes, Niskanen is older than Barrie, but Bura is younger than Wilson and Barrie both.

No trade upgrades every player on both teams. The Caps get a worse winger for their third line and upgrade at defense. The Avs get a younger, better winger and additional forward depth and get a little worse at defense but still have a top-4 guy signed for term. I don't believe this is as lopsided as y'all make it sound.

If I'm Brian MacLellan, and Sakic asks for Samsonov, I'm asking for Rantanen or MacKinnon back. Samsonov is practically untouchable.

Sorry, only one Caps goalie every five years. When Grubi wrecks his groin after a Vezina-caliber season and the Avs tank for a year, then DC will send over their current backup or goalie demanding more money than they're willing to pay.

This is something that I see on here all the time. People need to realize that just because you send 4 bodies over to another team that doesn't necessarily add value to a trade.

Not delusional, I'm just saying that we're not trading Samsonov unless the deal is amazing for us. We have no reason to trade him, and we're expecting him to be a stalwart in net for a long time.

He had a rough start to the season, but he's adjusted really well after the new year. He's at .929 SV% and 1.60 GAA, with 2 SOs.

I wasn't saying that the Caps would be able to get those two with Samsonov, I'm saying that it's a no unless the Avs threw one of them in. The Caps aren't trading Samsonov, and the Avs aren't trading MacK or Rantanen.

You are totally missing this...you think a goalie prospect can would only be moved if 1 of the Top players in the league is involved in a trade. I know that the Capitals wont trade him but you are talking about having to offer up elite talent...some of the best in the world for a goalie prospect having an up and down 1st season.

Goalies never fetch much in trades, but lets be serious here. If they were going to decide to move him, its going to be much much much less than 1 of the top players in the league

Some people like to try for the quantity over quality thing. I'll give you four nickles for that one quarter... Hey... you are getting 4 things for 1!!!

I agree with you. I'm just saying that the Caps won't move Samsonov for anything short of a king's ransom *right now*. Do I think Samsonov's current value would fetch a top 10 skater? Hell no. But with the Caps goalie situation being a bit murky after this season with Holtby's contract expiring in 2020, I think he has much more value internally. Holtby's contract also expires the same season as Backstrom's, so there's going to be a lot of money up in the air between those two, and the organization is going to sign Backstrom over Holtby.

DSP and Megna are next to useless in a trade. So you're looking at Bura + Niskanen for Barrie + Wilson.

I see a lot of people crapping on this, but I don't think it's far off. I think Capitals add a 2nd and this is actually fine. Barrie is a good Dman that expires next year and Caps are probably just fine with it - it fits their window because they have a lot of talent developing, just not righties. Niskanen, while on a down year, I still think has value. And maybe great value if he turns it around and finds the right partner.

I personally prefer Burakovsky and think he brings more than Wilson. Not a huge Wilson fan; I think he's a super average 3rd liner, whereas Burakovsky has better upside. I think this part of the trade helps the value.

I don't know, I think this is fair. And I think Caps adding a 2nd or 3rd pushes it into "favors Coloardo" territory.

You guys might be right on this, honestly. In comparing some of the metrics, Barrie is an obvious upgrade over Niskanen due to his age, contract, and stats (in my opinion), but I was surprised to see that Burakovsky has such a high relative Corsi and is roughly on par in terms of PPG with Wilson, especially when you consider that Burakovsky has played mostly on the 3rd or 4th line this year and last. So it really comes down to whether COL thinks that DSP and Megna for the rest of 2019 and Niskanen for an additional year of Barrie's contract are worth losing Barrie's 0.25PPG and +1.3 Corsi for 1.5 seasons.

Based on metrics alone, maybe an upgraded prospect over Megna and a conditional pick gets this done from a true value perspective, as has been already suggested.

Barrie is 27, signed through 2020 at AAV of $5.5mm, is a 0.63PPG RHD that averages 21:47/night and has a relative Corsi of +2.9
Niskanen is 32, signed through 2021 at AAV of $5.75mm, is a 0.38PPG RHD that averages 20:48/night and has a relative Corsi of +1.6

Wilson is 29, signed through 2019 at AAV of about $3.9mm, is a 0.45PPG winger with relative Corsi of +1.6
Burakovsky is 23, signed through 2019 at AAV of $3mm, is a 0.44PPG winger with relative Corsi of +3.5
