4th for Thompson would've been fair. But Bergy managed to squeeze a 5th out of this trade. So basically we get a 4th line center with decent defensive abilities and good faceoff % and we drop about 20 spots in the draft. It's not bad.

Another depth body for ... what 20 positions in the mid-late draft? MTL wins this one.

Lol that CGY pick will be a late 4th, and the ARI 5th will be an early one... 10 spots max difference. Not sure how useful Thompson will be, but he might possibly be the cheapest rental ever!

Edit:
If the season ended today it would be an 8 spot difference...

Technically speaking, final draft positions are based on post-season results. Tho you did say “if the season ended today” so if that includes the *post*-season, then yes. Likely you’re looking at a MAX of ~12 spots increase (if the Flames flame-out in Round 1) or a MIN of 4 or even 3 spots (if the Flames go all the way and the desert dogs falter in the home stretch).

I feel like Bergevin is trying bigger trades and end up with minors ones...

Frolin is not the Dman he was aiming for in Philly. (Sanheim?)
Thompson is not the foward he was aiming for in LA. (Kempe?)

More than ever youth is expensive in the NHL.

Agostino was put on waivers to clear a spot for Weise.

Thompson arrival puts MTL's roster at 24 players.

They now need to send down another player. Probably Chaput on waivers. Or a Hudon trade.

Not nearly as much as MIN next 4th round pick (No. 107).

It was traded 5 times already! Including a back and forth to Dallas and packaged in a bundle with Brassard.

Montreal trades down, let’s say maximum 20 picks in the mid-round for a solid 4th line center. Good pickup for the habs.

Depth for the habs without losing a pick? Pretty good honestly.

Brian Boyle and Jay Beagle are solid 4th line centers. Thompson is 4th line center on some teams and an AHL player on others.

GUYS

Of course he's cheap (free if you want to call it that) .... he hasn't been an NHL quality player for 2 years now .... and he has a $1.65 million cap-hit.

He's the type of guy you get for future considerations or from waivers.

He's on the same level as centers like Jooris and Mueller (who have been stuck in the AHL for 2 years).

Great PKing 4th line center. Has won a stanley cup, apparently great in the locker room. He instantly became one of our better Faceoff centers. It's a very underrated move that is going to do wonders for Montreal for basically free.

well, It gives us two great Pk centers... Danault and Thompson, that way Domi and KK don't have to sacrifice and we don't have to cry while Chaput struggle to get a puck out.

Pk -> Danault - Armia
-> Thompson - byron

Can say this now, Montreal won this trade easily. Thompson might be the best 4th liner in the NHL

LMAO ... OK bud.

- The dude has 1 goal in his 36 games with Montreal.
- This year he's got 5 secondary assists in 11 games.
- While playing an excessive 14 minutes per game.
- With a 42% CF% (-13.4% relative to his teammates).

Those are horrendous numbers ... the dude is 35 and doesn't belong in the NHL (clearly).

Congrats though ... but he'll be retired before the Habs make the playoffs again ...

Let's just remember that he's a 4th liner that plays 0 PP time. Starts 65% of his shifts in the defensive zone.

Why are you using CF when he's a defensive player that plays his entire shift in a shutdown role? Nothing like using advanced stats wrong to try and prove your point.

It's crazy how we got Thompson for moving down 20~ picks in the draft. He might be the best 4th liner in the league right now.
